I have several questions regarding subject:

System: Win7-Pro, All Service Packs, Single User.
MOBO: ASUS H97 Plus

1) If the older software is "Not Signed" will it install and run using "Compatabiliy Mode" or is some other tweak necessary either in Windows or MOBO?

2) If the software installs or needs various files (e.g. MSVBVM50.DLL) which comes in a executable (EXE)
and who know what else is in the EXE, will Windows 7 prompt before it overwrites current DLLs of the same name?

3) Of current interest is getting All-API-Guide loaded on Window 7 (ran fine on XP).
This is the link: AllAPI.net - Your #1 source for using API-functions in Visual Basic!
Install appears to run fine however notification is received saying "Not Signed"
Attemtping to run App after install -- including in various "compability modes" -- gives (error 50003).
Using Process Monitor have determined Software could NOT find"
a) cmctl98.chm -- whether CRITICAL is unknown
b) Two (I believe) language files (ENGLISH37.LNG and DUTCH37.LNG).
Search of NET has Not yielded anything on these files as to whether they were part of Win98
and WinXP.

Thanks

"1) If the older software is "Not Signed" will it install and run using "Compatabiliy Mode" or is some other tweak necessary either in Windows or MOBO?" One will have to invoke Compatibility Mode within main EXE properties, it often is not automatically done. Wifey and I had to install Windows XP Mode 'cause many games would not work within Windows 7 regardless of "say-so."

Not normally, most installs, even advanced or custom, often install with no warning of DLLs being over-written.
If you do full image backups of your OS partition - you can extract or copy specific files back into their original places; then, of course, the installed older program may no longer work.

I'm not remember all the steps, I do remember having to download the VM & WXP stuff; Pretty much both installs did their own thing without much input from me at all.

Here is the list of files involving VM/Windows XP Mode:
HAVDetectionTool.exe 179 KB 2/24/2016
HAVDetectionToolUserGuide.mht 880 KB 2/24/2016
UsingWindows7XPMode.htm 137 KB 9/22/2011
Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu 16691 KB 2/24/2016
Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu 15693 KB 2/24/2016
WindowsXPMode_64bit_en-us.exe 481051 KB 2/26/2016
WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe 481051 KB 2/26/2016
WindowsXPMode_N_en-us.exe 459758 KB 2/26/2016
WindowsXPModeFineTuning.htm 62 KB 7/24/2011
WindowsXPModeThreeModes.htm 120 KB 7/24/2011
WindowsXPModeUsage.htm 137 KB 9/22/2011
WndwsXPMdeHdwAssstdVrtlztnDtctnTl.exe 179 KB 2/26/2016
WndwsXPMdeHdwAssstdVrtlztnTchnlgy6x64.msu 4212 KB 8/28/2011
13 file(s) found
Total file size 1,460,156 KB
** Do not download and install everything you see above!! It's a collection over the years.**

I think the following is all that is needed:
Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu
WindowsXPMode_64bit_en-us.exe [I don't remember if there is a 32-bit EXE]

If any program or utility inside of Windows XP Mode's world attempts to make a direct hard-ware call...I do not know what happens. My games seem to do aok.

Regarding the VM.
1) Since I have XP and everything I need on another hard disk, can I load the VM on my Windows 7 hard disk and then
run the other program on the XP disk from the VM ?

2) Since these new MOBO and Win7 do NOT appear to allow both OSes running at the same time
how does the VM know I will be using XP to run the program ?

When a new Windows version appears a few years later, some older programs aren't compatible and refuse to work.
Right-click the program’s icon and choose Properties. When the Properties dialog box appears, click the Compatibility tab. In the Compatibility Mode section, select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For check box.
Select capability form Psp proprieties. chose setting window Xp. Compatibility mode lets you trick, programs into thinking they’re running on, older Windows versions. Click OK and then try running your program again to see whether it works better.

RonWesley:
Had tried compatability mode before my initial post. No Go.
Based on "Progress Monitor", if I'm correct in my analysis, I'm missing WinG.dll or WinG32.dll.
However I searched the old XP Windows directory created when Windows 7 was created and couldn't locate either DLL so my analysis may be wrong as to whats keeping the program from running -- or -- causing the error.
