Installing Ubuntu

Hi all, currently have Win 7 On one hard drive and XP on another drive.
Neither drives are partitioned. I want to install Ubuntu and would like some recommendation as to how I go about it and what is best to do I know I will have to partition one of the drives.

If I install on the Win 7 drive will I get the dual boot option for Win 7 & Ubuntu ? At the moment I am using the system boot option to boot into XP as standard boot goes straight into Win 7

One option if you are new to Ubuntu (or linux in general), is to perform the WUBI install of Ubuntu. You install this from within Windows and it installs into a file on your C drive and puts an entry into your Windows boot loader to select it at boot time. It's nice because you don't have to deal with partitions or risk screwing anything up to try it out. If you later decide it's not for you, from within Windows...you can simply do Add/Remove programs and select to uninstall Ubuntu. Couldn't be easier.

Ok so after many attempts to install Ubuntu inside of windows I get this after the boot menu.

Try (HD 0,0): NTFS5 No Wubildr

Any thoughts on this ?

Hi there
Install W7 FIRST

Now I'd get a LIVE CD of your linux distro -- this just boots from the CD and doesn't make any changes to your HDD's.

This will show you if your machine can run Ubuntu (or other Linux distro). If it works fine then you can install from the live CD via a menu. I find this better as the installs from a Live CD usually contain a lot less stuff on them -- some Linux distros get really bloated now.

You can then add other apps when you need them.

By installing from the live CD your W7 partitions won't be touched - you will also get a boot menu (GRUB) to chose the OS.

Note also most linuxes can WRITE to NTFS partitions now -- ensure ntfs-3g is installed (normally by default these days).

Personally I prefer the grub boot loader to select windows or Ubuntu; but I suppose it's all the same result in the end (when it works ).

If it's the latest Ubuntu, there will be an option to split one of your drivers in half, and the 2nd partition will be dedicated to Ubuntu, and it will install it's own bootloader, and includes the other OS's so u have a Triple boot.

Wubi is currently not working properly with Windows 7...it's a widespread issue.

Have you ever thought about using a program like VMWare for your linux installs and run it as a virtual machine?

I can get it to work eventually It usually comes up with the first message and then the last part of the message, then it reboots and works after that. All in all it takes about 5 minutes to get into the system, now I don't know whether this is a Microsoft fault or an Ubuntu fault but either way I am not impressed.

How ever once Ubuntu has loaded I am quite impressed with it.

Yes I had my external 1TB drive plugged in. Did that cause a problem ???

Possibly, can't defiantly say tho, just a good idea you unplug it during the install.

So i just wanna clear this, are you trying to install it inside windows or from a live CD now?
I strongly recommed the live CD, and if you're new to ubuntu, this is a simple, easy way. Sorry if i missed somthing.

AH, that makes sense. I would use the Grub boot loader for dual boot or virtualise ubuntu for learning purposes. I prefer VMWARE, but virtual PC is also good.

The only issue going virtualized is that you do have to run both the host and the guest OS concurrently. Also, if you are interested in setting up any of the 3d eye candy features from within Linux...you really need to run directly on the hardware to really get it working well. So, in those cases...the dual boot can be a better choice. (with or without using Wubi).
