How to uninstall Ubuntu ?

Ok so I have it installed it what I thought was windows, apparently it is not I have looked for a way to uninstall it but am completely stumped Any suggestions ? It is not that I don't like it in fact I am impressed with it. I just want to install it on a completely different drive & partition.

How did you install it?

Does it appear in the Windows boot loader when you start the PC, or does it start with the GRUB loader first?

If you used wubi and it starts with the boot loader, it should be in the Uninstall programs list in Control Panel.

Sadly it is not in there that was the first place I looked I also have Revo uninstaller and it is also not in there either Any other suggestions ?

hmm. Odd.

Can you find the 'ubuntu files' on your NTFS partition?

Perhaps post a screenshot of Disk Management to see if it hasn't actually installed to a physical non NTFS/ partition instead of a virtual HDD that wubi uses.

I've only used wubi once and it didn't play hide and seek :huh:

There is no other partition on the disk so I am guessing it has installed in windows some place. However and this is the but, there is no record of it anywhere in any of the programs I use to uninstall. The only thing i found was this. SO I know it is there but I can not find out for the life of me how to uninstall it

Have you tried downloading GParted? I split my XP partition with the partition software that comes with the Ubuntu live disc. The only problem I came across was reformatting the partition with the file type supported with Ubuntu.

This guy has his ubuntu inside his windows, so sorry that wont work.
Maby you should find an "uninstall ubuntu" option in ubuntu?

OK this is how I installed it.
1. Inserted CD whilst in windows
2 Opened up the Ubuntu Installation program selected the option to install in windows
3. Selected the amount of space I required
4. Created a password
5. Rebooted and selected Ubuntu from the options
6. let Ubuntu continue installing from the CD
7. Let it all finish and then rebooted
8. Brings me back to my original post
9 I can't uninstall the dam thing
10. Somebody must have a solution PLEASE

How do I uninstall Wubi?

Run the uninstaller in "Add or Remove Programs". Alternatively, you can run: C:\ubuntu\Uninstall-Ubuntu.exe.



If the uninstaller fails, try downloading and running Uninstall-Ubuntu.exe.

How do I manually uninstall Wubi?

Remove C:\ubuntu and C:\wubildr*

In Windows XP you need to edit C:\boot.ini and delete the Ubuntu/Wubi line. For Vista, you can use EasyBCD to edit the boot menu. Alternatively you can modify the boot menu via Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery and pressing "Edit". For Windows 98 you have to edit C:\config.sys and remove the Wubi block.

To remove Wubi from the add/remove list, delete the registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Wubi

An easy method of removing this registry key is to paste the following text into a plain editor such as Notepad, close and save the file as something like removeWubiKey.reg (you may wish to go to Folder Options > View and disable the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option to check that the .reg extension has been applied correctly). Then you can perform the rest automatically by opening the file in the normal Windows manner, or choosing the "Merge" option from the right click context menu. Note: The formatting is rather strict, so copy the text exactly for best results. You may need to be logged in as the administrator to delete the key, depending on the version of Windows you are using. User Account Control in Vista may also ask for permission, in the typical fashion.

After deleting the registry key, Ubuntu may still appear in the program list. If this is the case, you may be asked if you would like to remove the item from the list.

I have tried all of the above solutions and none have worked So I guess I am just going to have to re-clone the drive with my backup image, never thought it would be so hard to get rid of an OS

Well, yeah, pretty much. I find (doing this for a living) that the same question asked multiple times, produces multiple results.

Do you have another windows disc? You could just reformat the whole drive clearing everything off of it, but I'm not sure if you want to do that.

Yes I have my original disk, but I have too much stuff installed on it 46GB to just reinstall windows I do have an exact image which only take 30 minutes to reload so I am not to bothered really. I would have liked a result though but hey you can't have everything in life now can you ???

Sure, i understand. Just pointed out that you are probably right, but he says you arent, so what can you do?

Like I said I have an exact image which I make every week I always err on the side of caution, the image is stored on the Western Digital 1TB external drive. Have learnt my lessons from the past about not having a back up. I also backup my Outlook every day so I have lost nothing now except Ubuntu which is now off my system completely. The whole image restore took exactly 34 minutes which is not bad for 46.5GB.

Thanks Guys for all your input and suggestions sadly they were to no avail. I might just partition my drive now and install Ubuntu in it's own partition as I kind of enjoyed using it.
