Installing W7 on new SSD

Well I've given in and bought a 80GB SSD.

At the moment I have a 1TB HDD in 3 partitions.

52.6GB 'C' 0 6.75GB free
727GB 'D'
151GB 'E'

D and E have plenty of space on them.

To install windows on the new SSD lets call it 'F'.
I need to unplug the 1TB HDD, plug in the SSD and load from CD (I know how to install windows) Just install it, won't bother with partitions on it.

I will now plug in the 1TB

Once installed I have to do all the driver updates (I'm sure I'll miss a few out somehow)
Then programs etc and good to go.

What can I do with the 'C' drive on the 1TB? Should I just delete the partition?

I only use up 45.85GB so far on my C drive, so should have 34GB to play around with.. maybe put like WoW on there which is 23GB I think. Then leave the rest free?

Depending upon how many programs you have to install on the new SSD, you might want to use the HDD for User folders. You can wait to decide after trying it for awhile: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location.html

Be sure to unplug the HD during install to the SSD.

If you install to new SSD, the installer will issue a 100mb System Reserved boot partition which conveniently places the Repair Console (normally only on the DVD or Repair CD) on the F8 Advanced Boot Tools menu. So I would choose Custom Install and then Drive Options to partition as you wish and format: Clean Install Windows 7

If you have Upgrade version you may need to skip inserting the key during install and do one of the workarounds given here for installing to a wiped HD: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Turn this on as well: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...-your-hardware

Any drivers then missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Driver Install - Device Manager

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they slow startup, become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly.

Then save a Windows 7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement using DVD or Repair CD. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

In addition to all the good advice above, I suggest you delete the hiberfile on the SSD (if you do not use hibernation). That saves a few GBs on C. The command is: powercfg -h off

A lot of input to take in! Quite confusing tbh!

Tbh, I don't have many programs at all. All my documents go into another partition not the windows one. But like some game saves and msn history goes somewhere in the OS/Apps partition. Then I get things in like user/oli/appdata or something

So I'll just do a clean reinstall. Though I just looked at: C:\Users\Oli's\AppData\Local and its 13GB. So the http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...move-during-windows-7-installation.html?ltr=U might be useful to save space?

As for hibernate, I use sleep mode (I think thats a bit different)

If you only use sleep, then you can get rid of the hiberfile. It can be a big chunk - about the size of your RAM

here's a random Q. I have SAY CAPS LOCK LIKE THIS. Is there a way to make it none caps? Most likely not as it's different in binary or whatever

Ok I have read through everything, few questions. Never done one of these disk images before. Presumably I do this before windows updates and driver updates? And use it when I need to reinstall

This make it sound like I need to select my DVD Drive? Which in my case is F. While D is a storage partition.

I would want all of the user folders to go to the C drive *currently the OS drive* on my 1TB HDD. Which I will format before installing the SSD. So do I change the script to the letter F for my DVD Drive, or C for the location I want the user files to be installed to?

I will no doubt change the letter though on the 1TB from 'C' to something else to make it easier to understand, when I format it

I am not familar with that method of installing while changing user directory location so can't advise you on that.

Slightly lost here, am I doing the option 1 or option 2?

If option 2 I guess its option 2 within that one as well (regedit one)

If you want to move your entire named User account's folders - Documents, Fravorites, Music, Pictures, etc... - then use Option 1.

If you want to pick and choose the folders you move then use Option 2.

Option 1 it is then, I don't even use the music folder etc..as storage is on another partition.
It's the app data which takes up space. Which can go on the hdd

You can delete AppData temp files as they are not needed and often harbor infection and corruption.

As a matter of course, never import AppData files as they are the Number One corruption path into a clean reinstall. Just start with fresh program installs and settings.
