Solved Installing Windows 7 over Windows 10 on a laptop...hangs at logo

Hello 7 Forums,

This is my first posting here -- I'm trying to install Windows 7 onto my new laptop which came with Windows 10 installed (it was an unasked for gift because I had wanted to avoid this nightmare -- which is an ungenerous attitude, I realize). I have a desktop with Windows 7.

Anyway, I tried to install Windows 7 using my Home Premium disk and the process hangs at the Windows Logo.

I was hoping to use the Windows 7 disk to access the command prompt and skip the driver hang (I assume that's causing the hang).

Well, I'm doing something wrong because it skips step 6 and goes straight to the logo and hangs as usual.

UPDATE: I finally got to step 6 but I get the following error, "Virtual Disk Service Error: Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume"

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Can you still boot into win-10 and which version was it Home or Pro ?

Mostly a little prep in win-10 might help
For one disable Fast start in win-10 and in your bios
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Secure boot also needs to be either disabled or os type needs to be changed to Other os or uefi and oprom or something similar to that.

CSM needs to be enabled either way
Which your bios is probably set to uefi only which might be why it's hanging plus win-10 fast start isn't helping matters.

Post some pictures of what options you do show in bios Boot/ Security.

Hi Flodev,
couple of other things to note

W7 does not have generic USB3 drivers
If your discs are product specific ie Dell and your installing on an Acer then you will encounter problems.
you will need a product key to activate W7, and unless your laptop maker supplied it with W7 downgrade rights you will not be able to licence it, and your install of 7 may have corrupted the 10 licencing data files.

Yes I had secure boot disabled. I have enabled "CSM with..." and disabled fast start. Trying again. Will post update whatever the consequences.

Make sure you verify os type is not uefi only that is the important one easily missed

I have two boxed versions of Windows 7 home premium -- purchased at CEX in advance of moving from XP this year Yup, extreme Luddite me.

If my win 10 is corrupted then I'll have to call Curries/PC and find out where my key is...can't find it on under the laptop.

Lol. Indeed and thanks for the reminder.

Okay the outcome is that the installation process was successful after I made the following changes: enabling "CSM with..." in the bios; and disabling fast start in Win 10.

Great news and you're welcome,
Yes fast start inside win-10 is really a hibernation state so 10 is not really shut down completely
And yes it is very annoying and multiple hdd harming if dual booting with another os because it trigger check disk for errors so there is a real chance of corruption happening,

Win-7 is on the M$ hit list
