Intel and AMD have similar frequencies, but Intel has more cache, so I went with that. As for nVidia and ATI...I've just heard more about nVidia, so I went with that.

Hehe, Thanks TT :)

Yes it's nice when you can have things spread out,
I have alot of stuff crammed onto one side of the room
for ease of access.

The other side of the room has some deprecated equipment
and hardware I use for testing and such.

And the closet is chock full of software dating back ages.
For example, remember this :D

Alright Antman...I need a good professional reconmendation...I am looking for a processor for a board a friend gave me...the socket on the board is LGA775...I am looking to not spend much but I want to have some power behind it...thoughts?

Anyone can jump in here (didn't want to start a whole thread for this...seeing how it ties in here)
If you're strictly a gamer you can get an e8400 3.0Ghz dual core(~$150) which can easily/safely be overclocked to 3.6-3.8Ghz on air cooling
If you want a processor that can do it all ie:Gaming, multitask without taking performance hit, render video/graphics quickly, go for the q9550 2.83Ghz quad(~$219) which can easily/safely be overclocked to 3.6-3.8Ghz on air cooling.

Also want to mention a quad is more future proof as more Apps and Games are starting to utilize it.

Intel & nVidia. Is AMD & ATI (really AMD) really a viable choice? I got burned a long time ago by AMD, since then it has been Intel and nVidia all through the years (even though they are pricier)

I actually find this as a surprise because I work heavily with video and find that the phenom II x4 is unmatched at least for what I have done.

I seem to get a really impressive frame rate encoding video with the newer multi-core AMD chips.

But most of the difference probably comes from more than just the processor you have installed. Your board can really make a difference in performance when working on something so intensive on the system.

Something else I wanted to note from experience with Intel systems.

I had a celeron 2.7Ghz back on socket 478a and I always had heat issues with that particular processor. I ran that CPU on an Intel motherboard with 2Gb of Kingston memory copper cooled. I ended up buying a really extreme cooler for the processor just to keep the heat within a reasonable range under normal usage.

I still to this day do not understand why I had all the heat issues with that system because it should have ran ice cold with all of the cooling I had in the machine. But it didn't it ran really hot which was weird and frustrating the entire time I had the system.

Read some reviews on the Phenom II x4, I'm running a quad extreme at 4.2ghz, the only thing that is holding me back is the fact i'm still running DDR2 memory but not for long. Also the 1600mhz front side bus with 12mb of L2 cache helps too.

Intel e8200 because it only cost $99 sold old processor for same price. Hits 3.6 on stock voltage.

Nvidia, had 4850 and 4870. Horrible driver support in both linux and osx. Also both ran hot and ati drives suck in windwos too. Got a gtx 260 for 110, same price i sold my 4870 for. Have had ati since 9700, feels good to have nvidia though.

I've always used Intel - I've nothing against AMD though.

I was always a nvidia person, but when I first put this rig together, I felt like trying something new so I picked a 4850 as a temporary card.

I was happy enough with it to add a second for crossfire. Now I'm crossfiring a pair of 4890's and I can't really complain.

I'm not brand loyal so come next big upgrade, I could go either way.
