Intermittent monitor blanks

Hi,

I'm experiencing intermittent monitor black outs which last for about 3 seconds before the monitor comes back to life. They occur randomly and I've got no idea what is causing them. It has only started happening since I switched to HDMI from DVI. I'm using an Nvidia video card and a BENQ monitor.

I've have no idea what the problem is here so if anyone has any common solutions, please share.

Does a dialog box in the bottom right hand corner pop up saying 'Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered?

No. It just goes blank, then comes back on and displays the message 'Input: HDMI' box which is what I see when I turn the computer on, or wake it up from sleep.

DVI and HDMI are the excat same except for HDMI carrys sound. That being said, are you using a tv as a monitor? Is the montior in question have speakers built in and are the speakers being used? What do you use for speakers?
Have you looked in device manager for any issues with the monitor? Have you adjusted the resolution from the recommened settings?

Hi,

I use external speakers but I have had sound running through the monitor before. I'm using a computer monitor which doesn't have speakers, just a headphone jack which I have used before. Also, I've double checked that the resolution settings are right. There doesn't seem to be any problems with the monitor in the device manager.

Also I have reinstalled the drivers for the monitor and the video card, problem still persists. It's weird that it happens only with DVI...

If your using external speakers, there is no need to use an HDMI cable for the monitor(s). I would just use the DVI cable, then check to see of problem still happens.

There could be a setting in your bios to check for HDMI connections.

I could switch back to HDMI but I've bought a DVI cord now and there not that cheap. Also The DVI cord is longer and easier meaning i can put my computer where I want it to go.

I'll check BIOS and let you know if there is anything in there

There doesn't seem to be any useful settings in BIOS. I think it happens more when I move the computer around, could be a bad graphics card.

Have you checked whether the graphics card has become unseated slightly? I have had computers work, but the GPU became slightly unseated, and it caused similar issues. Especially when, like mine, it is held in by a single strip of plastic.

Likewise, check the cable is properly attached at both ends, both power cable and DVI cable, it's easy to look at them and think they are in properly but they aren't.
