Internet connection failover PPPoE & 3G - What software

Hi,

We have a fairly unstable Internet connection through Dodo (Please no quips about peanuts and monkeys, I know Dodo is a terrible ISP). They, and Telstra have refused to fix the problems, preferring instead to blame my equipment, despite the fact that I have replaced every part of the network many times over. Line noise on the connection is terrible, and causes anything up to 30+ disconnections a day, from anywhere between 10 seconds to 90 minutes.

As my sons play a lot of online gaming, disconnections not only kill the game, but also get them demoted on the servers.

So, they have a 3G mobile phone with 1.5GB data allowance per month.

But we are having problems finding any software (preferably FREE), that will let us set up a fail over environment such that when the PPPoE connection fails it switches to 3G, and automatically reverts to PPPoE when that service comes back online.

Any one know of any software that meets this need?

I think you are looking for Connectify dispatch which can use both the ISP connection and the 3G at the same time though it's not exactly free it may still be worth the price.

That is exactly the package I recommended to some one else recently on a post here.

Sadly, we've played with that package, and it doesn't do what we need it to.

However, we did come up with a manual work around, using NETSH SET INT .. to enable/disable the two connections.

It's not elegant, and we'd prefer something a little more robust and automatic, but it works.

I haven't tried the dispatch software so not sure what it's capable of, I figured you knew about it already though. I thought the dispatch software would do this sort of thing by setting the 3G to work for certain programs and the ISP connection for the others. Of maybe even allow the 3G to take over when the ISP goes down.

Man I can't believe how often your ISP connection goes down, mine is like once a year maybe.

Dispatch does do exactly what you are saying, but that's not what we are after.

We only want to use the 3G connection when the ISP connection fails, and then revert to the ISP connection automatically once the link is reestablished.

We can actually share the connection without any third party software - windows will do it automatically, though it's not very efficient.

I think Australia has the worst internet value compared to most places. Telstra has the monopoly, and they will give you the crappiest services you are willing to live with, and if you try to get a better service, they just blacklist you.
