Internet connection problem

My husband and I both have laptops, mine in the study and his in the bedroom. We are within 30 feet of each other and share a wifi signal. The cable modem and router are located beside my desk in the study. This setup has worked well for over 2 years and then all of sudden his laptop's connection speed dropped to .44 mbs download and .20 mbs upload yesterday. Right after I checked his connection speed, I ran a speed test from the same site (speakeasy.net) and got 17+ mbs download and 1.22 upload.

My initial thought was that the wireless connection inside of his laptop was failing, but I tried connecting him to the Verizon mobile hot spot that we use while traveling and it worked fine. I was also able to successfully send a request to the printer located here in the study using his wireless connection.

One thing we did notice is that both of our laptops are showing a yellow triangle on our connection icon when we open up the wireless connection window.

Any thoughts?

Hello,
That dreaded triangle surely states you need to either reset router, diagnose connection issues (Win7 troubleshooter,) or you have a new nasty program causing issues with your network. Apple's Bonjour (ITunes/Quicktime) always kills my connection.

Hi DeeMax45, welcome to 7F! :)

Let's see if I understand; Your husbands machine is running slowly (all of a sudden), yours is not, but you both have the yellow triangle?
Being its all of a sudden I would suspect either Windows Updates not working nicely with your Avast or an update to Avast.

  • Have you tried rebooting either machine?

  • Did you have any problems on either machine, with February's Patch Tuesday from Windows Updates.

  • Do you know if you have KB3001652 installed? If you do, uninstall it and retest internet connections. If it shows up again hide it until we know your internet is okay, you can install later as microsoft has re-issued it.
Jason Gurley Feb 11, 2015; Windows Update killed my network this time. Restoring that computer back now, may have been some unpleasant reaction between these updates and Avast anti-virus (which tried to apply its own things at the same time)

Have you done anything recently with your version of Avast like changing any settings, does it update automatically? I'm seeing multiple reports on how Avast's online security is slowing speeds down.

This is from a year ago:
When you install the most recent version of avast! Free Antivirus, the company's avast! Online Security extension will be added to the browser (it is also added if you install a paid version).
