I'm posting from it right now. It's working extremely well, has no issues with any plug-ins I had installed previously, and hasn't had any trouble interacting with my SharePoint sites, either.

Not without a registry hack probably. I don't think any release of IE for Window's 7 will ever allow this to happen.

IE 9 64 Bit still cannot be set as the default browser? :banghead:

The restart caught me by surprise, especially since it didn't 'fully' restart.

(No, I never used the RC)

The rendering engine for IE is used to display content for Explorer and the help system as possibly several other internal systems. Did you notice that the IE install completely shut down your desktop during install? :)

So yes, a restart is required to completely replace the old html renderer with the new one since parts of it are base OS components.

So far IE9 RTM is working well in the limited testing I've been able to give it.

One thing they did not "fix" from the RC that will bother me forever is the popup at the bottom of the page. I get one with "This site has been modified to prevent cross site scripting" on like half the pages I visit and that notice is WAY too large and covers a good portion of the bottom of the page. :P

If they really wanted to CONSTANTLY be giving me "status" then they should have just implemented a status bar at the bottom that took up much less space, and the ability to hide it I don't care about it's cross site modification notices.

The download went well for me over the RC version. However, now at idle, my machine is using a little more RAM then with the RC. I haven't been able to pinpoint the reason, but I see about 50mg's more then before and 4% higher readings in task manager.

I downloaded it so my machine is current, but I won't use it, as IE9 isn't even close to Chrome. It's not really a knock on IE9, but rather a compliment on just how good Chrome is.

A noticeable increase in speed on my Mini with an Atom and 2GB. A thumbs up in that category. The back button? A definite thumbs down. It may be a minor detail as far as function but it looks like crap from a visual standpoint. I can't believe this wasn't fixed for the final version.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to merge the min-max-close buttons with the address/tab bar, so that the UI is slimmer? I see no reason for those 3 buttons to for the UI to be so fat.

Did you notice that the IE install completely shut down your desktop during install? :)

I did. It was installing in the background whilst I was in Opera and then suddenly MSE flashed red, Opera shut, explorer closed and restarted and I was miffed because I was just about to hit reply :p

It was no biggie - I was just curious at the time why some were having to completely restart the system while others like myself, did not.

Curiosity satisfied now :)

Microsoft's one-year effort developing Internet Explorer 9 is coming to fruition as it readies its browser release tonight.

The new browser will be available for download at 9:00 p.m. Pacific time here. Those using the release candidate version of the browser will get an automatic update to the release-to-Web (RTW) version. IE 9 is being launched as part of the South by Southwest event currently taking place in Austin, Texas. Ryan Gavin, senior director of Internet Explorer business and marketing, talked about some of the highlights leading up to the launch in a phone chat on Friday.
RTW Improvements
Microsoft typically bakes in features by the time of its RTW releases. The development team assessed more than 17,000 comments in creating this final release, according to Microsoft officials. Gavin described some of the improvements that happened from the time of the release candidate to this final RTW product.

It sounds like you have another issue there, because I'm not seeing it use any more RAM than IE8. It's worlds faster than the previous version. Fill out your system specs and we can go from there.

IE9 32-bit is noticeably faster than Chrome 10, my preferred browser of choice (although I would have no complaints using IE 7/8/9 on a daily basis). But, interestingly, IE9 64-bit is noticeably slower. Attached is a quick SunSpider test comparing the 3.

Also, sadly, IE9 doesn't have that "click" noise when clicking on links anymore, but it can easily be enabled under IE9's "Advanced" settings. Just check the box that reads "Play system sounds".

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...wsing-internet-windows-explorer-turn-off.html

I'll be testing out IE9 some more, and I might just have to switch on over to IE9 :).
