Inverted Touchpad Action - Mouse Unaffected

Hi Folks,

This has got me stumped.

Old Sony Vaio laptop which is about 10 y.o. and had a clean install of Windows 7 HP off a M$ disc around 2 years ago.

I generally put the laptop to sleep rather than shutting it down.

Recently, it has become VERY SLOW (the subject of another thread).

I prefer to use a mouse (Logitech Wireless nano USB) which had continued to work fine but occasionally when the laptop wakes, the action of the trackpad is inverted - by this I mean when I move my finger left, the cursor moves right and when I move my finger up, the cursor moves down. This makes navigating using the trackpad (something I don't often do VERY confusing). The mouse is completely unaffected when this happens and works as expected.

I CANNOT find a setting anywhere to correct this. Some of the solutions on the web that I've looked at want me to go into settings that my installation of the OS doesn't appear to have.

Currently, it is behaving itself and both trackpad and mouse move the cursor as expected.

I've not installed any recent software and on waking, the laptop doesn't always exhibit this behaviour.

Any ideas folks?

ZAph

Hi ZaphodB,

I would look to reinstall the driver from the Sony disk [if you have one] or from their official site!

I hope this helps!

This laptop is not a dell it is a Sony but anyways had already suggested reinstalling driver. Could have something to do with laptop being very slow.

I realised what I had put and I had already changed it before your post!
I have just read his other post and I think you are probably right!

Thanks for the replies folks.

Lots of family stuff happening at the moment meaning I hadn't got as far as re-installing the drivers.

As I use the wireless mouse 99% of the time it hasn't really een much of an issue - just VERY PUZZLING.

Also puzzling is the fact that when waking from sleep, it doesn't always do it.

The first time it happened I did a cold boot - thinking that would resolve the issue - however it didn't.

I then thought that something e.g. a setting somewhere has been switched, searched for an answer on the web but couldn't find the same setings on the laptop. A further thought that maybe something like a .dll had become corrupt - but as it wasn't really affecting my use of the pc using the wireless mouse, I basically ignored it.

I'm still puzzled as to what is happening but I'll see what the SONY site has in regards of a driver (if I haven't already got one on the machine somewhere) and try re-installing it.

Thanks for the input,

Zaph

The bigger issue with the laptop is the fact that it is so damned slow!

Hmm...

I have another ancient laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1525, that I installed Win 10 on as a trial when Micro$oft offered it for free.

It took quite a bit of tweaking to get it looking and behaving like I wanted.

What I DON'T LIKE is that updates are forced on you - you have no choice.

I may look again at Win 10 - but I'd have to be convinced that it would breathe new life into the VAIO. I suspect that there is a hardware issue making it so slow - one of (a) CPU, (b) RAM or (c) HDD - but so far all the tests I've run seem to suggest that these components are fine.

In my other current thread (https://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/420609-sony-vaio-being-extremely-slow-everything-seems-check-out.html) a test I ran today highlighted the HDD and RAM as problem areas (see post #3 in that thread). Unfortunately, the BIOS in the VAIO has very limted settings and I can't optimise the memory for XMP.

I may pop an old drive in, FDISK and reformat it and pop a copy of Win 10 on just to see what it is like. Don't hold out much hope though.

As an aside, is it still possible to get a legal, FREE upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 and if so, how?

Thank you.

Having once run the 'Media Creation Tool' to upgrade the Inspiron 1525 a couple of years ago, I guess I'll have to re-do it as the older tool will have an earlier build of Windows 10 on it?

Cheers,

Zaph

Worked like a charm.

Now have Windows 10 (version 1903, Build 18362.295) on this laptop.

Took bl**dy ages to install however after two and a half hours, I gave up and went to bed leaving the laptop to do its own thing. In the morning, laptop off and Windows 10 installed.

Now I have the delights of forced updates to look forward to :(
