ip address help

how do i reset my router do you mean turning it off and on again

That's one way of doing it, there may also be a reset button on the side.

The chances are you have s dynamic IP address because most ISPs charge extra for static IPs. One of the fee advantages of having a static IP is that you can host websites far more easily than with dynamic ones but it also means that if a hacker finds your IP address they have limitless time to try and attack your firewalls etc. because they always know what your IP address is.

Your IPv4 address is the internal address your router assigns to you. Some IP addresses are reserved to so called private networks, they are only for internal use. Routers usually assign IP address to your network devices (computers etc) from these reserved address blocks like 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255 and 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255.

Internal IP address has nothing to do with your external IP. Your computer usually always has two IP addresses, internal and external. Internal IP's are only used for allowing devices in your network communicate with each other, and to connect to the router. All your devices share the same external IP; the external IP is not assigned to a computer, it's assigned to a router.

For instance, all my computers and other network devices like IPTV receivers etc. in my home network have internal IP address ranging from 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.10. I can choose any of the computers, go online and check the external IP for instance in What Is My IP Address, and it shows the same IP for every computer.

Lease has to do with internal IP assigned by your router. Think it as an authorization that router has given to your computer. Lease obtained tells since when the computer has had this internal IP, lease expiration tells how long the IP is still valid. Lease renewal is done automatically always when the NIC (network card) is connected to the router, for instance when you boot the computer.
