I totally hosed myself today – please try to help me recover!

Today, on my Windows 7 machine, I ran Autoruns (see Autoruns - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn). I deleted a few things that weren’t found (shouldn’t have caused any issues). I then tried to disable a service, I think it was in the Microsoft Live area, but was told that it could not be disabled, only deleted. Since I do not use Microsoft Live, I figured it was safe to delete. Note that there were four of these in two separate folders.

I continued using the computer without issue for a while, put it in standby, and walked away. When I came back, I did some local stuff without issue, but then tried to access a website and was told ‘Server could not be found’. Okay, weird stuff happens, so I rebooted.

After entering the password, the system did nothing for a period of time, then the entire screen became white, then it finally logged me in, with an error message about System.Net.Sockets.SocketEngine. I tried accessing the internet again, same issue. I then tried accessing another computer on my LAN, but couldn’t.

I did some looking around and based on what I saw, I ran a command prompt as Administrator, did netsh winsock reset; netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt, rebooted, but had the exact same issues. I figured I would look at the system log, but when I ran the event viewer, I was told ‘Event log service is not available’. I tried using LSP-fix, but that did nothing.

I then tried WinsockFix, but when I ran it, I was told ‘Registry Important information not found’.

I am totally hosed as my computer is essentially useless. Can someone suggest something I can try to revive my computer? Would it be possible for someone to find those four services I deleted and send me ‘text’ that I can run to make them happen again?
PLEASE HELP!!!

I have Restore turned off, so that won't help.

I logged into another machine, found the four services I had deleted, restore them - but that didn't help. How effed am I?

When I ran a command window and tried pinging a local machine, I was told 'Unable to initialize Windows Sockets interface. Destination address unreachable.' Doe this provide a clue as to what I should do?

If you turned off system restore and haven't got any image backups one thing you could attempt is a repair install.

:ar: Repair Install

Out of pure desperation, I downloaded and ran tweaking.com – Windows Repair 4.14.0. It actually fixed the problem - hallelujah.

Glad you got it fixed

Plug in an external USB HDD, download a copy of Macrium Reflect Free edition, and set it up to image your system weekly and keep a rolling 4 backups. It can make a rescue USB stick you can boot off of and restore from an image. That way you have a time machine backup setup you can use to restore your system to any point in the last month
