Is defragging "old hat"? Probably yes. Faster hard drives and improved operating system efficiency seem to make defragging unnecesary. And if you're using a SSD instead of a traditional spinner, defragging is a no-no. (Windows 7 should turn defragging off if it detects a SSD.)

Do you still need to defrag? Maybe (as long as you're not using a SSD.) My rule of thumb is to open disk defragmenter and click on Analyze Disk. If it shows 5% or more, I defrag. But that's just me.

File fragmentation isn't as big an issue as many people believe and with SSDs it isn't an issue at all. But defrag is still a good thing to do. But with Windows 7 you can set a schedule when it is done so you can essentially forget about it. Just be sure the computer is on during the scheduled time.

You should still defrag spinner hard drives but you do not defrag ssd drives. I defrag normally as a monthly maintenance procedure.

My two cents worth I prefer the Windows defrag too as I ma told I presumably correctly that 7 is a bit more fussy than XP or Vista was on how it is defragged.

Oh - only on spinners too as the others said.

Yes mate they are ok but I don't actually have to use then much these days if at all because of the SSD's . Like I said earlier I think most o the techies in here will tell you Windows 7 is a tad fussy where the files are stored.
