Is force quitting bad for your laptop?

Sometimes when I leave my computer on for too long (maybe over 24 hours? I'm not sure) it becomes slow. So I try to turn it off and reboot but sometimes it's too slow to even shut down. So I force shut down. Does that cause any problems?

Could this problem be fixed if I get 16ram to replace the 4ram?

Yes, forcing a shut down can damage your computer. It's usually better to just be patient and let it shut down on its own if possible.

I doubt the problem is the amount of RAM you have. If your RAM being used has exceeded the amount you have and that is what is slowing your computer, you probably have a memory leak and that needs to be addressed. Keep your task manager up so you can check the amount of RAM you're using when the computer slows down.

Another possible cause of the slowdown is overheating. Laptops often have cooling issues. Cleaning out any built up dust inside might help.

A quick cure for overheating or memory leaks might be to just shut the thing down every few hours and give it some time to cool before restarting. Frequently shutting down and restarting won't hurt it.

While force quitting won't physically harm your laptop, it could corrupt system files and make it unbootable.

Overheating is a real possibility and the suggestion to clean out any built up dirt & lint is a good one. Adding more RAM will not help the situation.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
What would be a long term cure for memory leaks?
How do I check to see if there is built up dust and clean it out?

How do you check ? Take apart the laptop. How do you clean ? With compressed air in a can.

If you do not know how, take it to a professional. You should have it looked anyway, you should not be having these shutdown problems.

It probably just needs to have Windows re installed.

Memory Leaks ? Put a bucket under it ;)

But seriously, don`t worry about it.

It is under best buy black tie warranty but then I wouldn't have a computer to use while it is gone.

You would be best off to suck it up and take it on in to Best Buy. Messing with it yourself could possibly void the warranty. You paid for that warranty; you may as well use it. It may be inconvenient to be without a computer for a short while but it won't kill you.

If you absolutely cannot do without a computer for any length of time (and there are valid reasons for that so I'm not trying to put you down), then you should consider having a spare one knocking about (I have a notebook I got for when I travel but it can also serve as a spare computer for when and if my desktop is down).

If you really need to leave a computer running fulltime (again, there are valid reasons for that; I run mine 24/7), you would be wise to make that "spare" computer a desktop. Except maybe for some of the really expensive models, laptops aren't designed to run for more than a few hours a day.

How long did Best Buy say it would take to get it repaired? Only you can answer the question of whether a $50 computer would be worth it to you to use in the absence of your other computer.

I've never sent a computer in for repairs in the 30 years I have been using them so I can't relate to your situation. Not only that but I have quite a few "spares" that I could use in the meantime if I ever had to send one in.
