Hello SevenForums,
Hoping to get some thoughts/advice on this :
(apologies in advance for long post, had to put all i know about the issue in there)
Specs : (Mid 2015 build, sorta budget)
CPU : AMD FX6300 (Stock Speeds, no OC)
Cooling : Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard : Asrock 970 Extreme 3 R2.0
RAM : 2x4GB HyperX DDR3
GPU : MSI GTX 960 4GB
PSU : Seasonc S12II 520 (previously a corsair CX430)
HDD : Western Digital Blue 1TB
OS : Windows 7 Pro 64Bit
Problem : PC randomly freezes, Mouse and Keyboard stop working/responding (backlight still on), HDD light stops completely. No audio loop. Only solution is a Hard reboot using the power button.
Detailed History of the problem : It all started a week after i put this pc together in 2015. I experienced this situation 2 times while playing Battlefield 4. I unplugged and replugged everything, it stopped (I also stopped playing BF4 at that moment).
Now this PC isnt used regularly, It sometimes stays unplugged for months while i'm away, so i cant really tell how many times it happens over a specific period of time. And, as i said, its quite random. i used it for a few months in 2016, mostly mid-intensive games, zero freeze.
Fast forward to 2017. Been using my pc for a good 4 months that year and no freezes, at this point i had basically forgotten about them. Then it freezed again, during windows 7's boot sequence this time.
Problem disappears again, until i started playing The Witcher 3, a month later. 5-6 freezes, always while playing TW3. (i only use it for gaming anyway).
I started doing some research, narrowed it down to 2 possible culprits : PSU and MOBO. HDD seems unlikely, it works fine, no clicking, not that much use anyway, speeds are perfectly ok, CrystalDisk reported nothing wrong at that time (2017) (still the same today)Now, BF4 and TW3 are intensive games (at that time, not much of a deal for more recent hardware ofc.), so i started looking at the PSU : i had a Corsair CX430, which, as i realized, is a pretty bad quality PSU. While that didnt explain the freeze that happened during windows boot, i decided to swap it for a better unit, a Seasonc S12 II 520. Problem disappeared. i went from a freeze roughly every 10 hours of TW3 to zero. Played 200 hours of that game, no problem. I thought it was fixed.
I was wrong. End of 2017, it freezed on Overwatch's menu. Starting from there, it happens super randomly, sometimes when using chrome, gaming... no specific pattern.
It seems that replacing the PSU only reduced the frequency at which the freezes happen. i can play an intensive game for 6 hours per day, , several weeks in a row, no problem, and then boom, freeze.
At this point i'm just suspecting the Mobo, i know it's a 4+1 and cant handle FX 8xxx but this is a 6xxx without OC, and freezes happened on non-intensive tasks too (opening chrome for example). As i said, HDD is still fine. Freezes happen on ethernet or wifi, tried with different Keyboard/mouse, tested RAM, etc... I cant intentionnally reproduce it so gathering info is pretty hard. It may work for hundred of hours without issues and then randomly freeze.
i've also seen a not-huge-but-noticeable amount of similar threads on the internet about Asrock's "Extreme" series.
Considering an AM4 upgrade if the mobo is at fault, i cant get a new one in 2020 anyway.
Any thoughts/ideas/similar experiences ?
