is it a dead laptop or can it be fixed ?

hi

my laptop looks like it has a massive problem.

i have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -

* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on\ enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.


its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all.

i run Windows 7 on a Dell inspiron 1564

Do you have any Dell Install or recovery Discs ? If not contact them about getting some. There may be a shipping charge involved.

ive got the installation discs but when i have booted up from the discs - nothing - i also cant seem to access any menues to re-install Windows 7 - unless someone knows another way

Can you Get at the bios screen (press DEL when booting ) and set the boot order to run CD /HDD/USB in that order then you should be able to boot from the DVD installation disc

Have you tried Pebby's suggestion above? Given the timing I guess not. Try it then come back with the result!

ive had a look at the forums re windows 7 troubling shooting given the links but nothing seems to work

i need to check my Dell warrenty but as ive had the laptop nearly 3 years i think its run out.

i just find it unbelievable that laptop is in this condition at moment as im not a heavy user.

rusalka, Did you look in the bios ,if so did you change the boot order and were you able to boot the DVD ?

i cant boot at all from the cd - just leads to the black screen - everything i do leads to the black screen of no activity
im just wondering if my disc/ hard drive is corrupted to the degree that its almost impossible to access -

rusalka have you tried the 1 time boot menu F12 power on the laptop and repeatedly tap the F12 key this will bring up a 1time menu from there choose boot from cd

Do you see anything on the screen when 1st powered ON ? Could the laptop screen be burnt out ?

ive tried to boot from F12 - alas after a few seconds it goes to black screen with no activity from the laptop
cd leads me nowhere. theres something preventing any hard drive activity to take any thing further

Good point Doc,rusalka, if you shine a flashlight onto the screen when its 1st powered on can you see anything? if you can that means that the CCl or the inverter has gone , if not then your GFX card has expired

rusalka, Even with no HDD attached to your motherboard ,you should still be able to boot to a CD/DVD this is pointing towards a mobo malfunction

With the power OFF, would you be comfortable opening the HD bay & removing the HD. Then with it out try powering ON with a bootable DISC in the DVD/CD drive.

i dont know what a mobi malfunction is & i dont know what an HD bay is - im not sure i can do anything like that

if you expain a bit more i may be able to have ago.

Ok rusalka , download the service manual from here Manuals and Documents for Inspiron 1546 | Dell US this will explain how to take the Hdd out , a mobo malfunction is just my way of saying the mobo may be on its way out ,dying
