I've followed every link on this subject. Downloaded the SP1 standalone executable. Ran the SRT and inspected the log. Renamed SoftwareDistribution. Did the clean boot thing. SP1 still will not install. My only other alternative is to reinstall Windows 7 using an Windows 7 SP1 disc.

Please tell me there's a solution....Somewhere out there....

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Sorry. I'm frustrated as I have to travel approx forty miles to lay hands on this PC and I've spent more time on it than it's worth to me. Have attached CheckSUR and CBS.log to this message. Tried to satisfy the missing components from CheckSUR, but the log lies (somewhat.) KB979900 and KB979916 are already in place or won't install bec Windows reports they're already installed. The other stuff I can't resolve to a name of an update that I can download.

Like I good boy, I've done the other stuf. Nothing seems to be wrong except this damn thing won't install ! Awaiting other suggestions. TIA...

I've uploaded a file - jm3aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder jm3aa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

The attached CheckSUR looks (to me) clean. I tried the SP1 stand-alone again and it says it was ready to install SP1 ! Rather than cause my client further grief, I'll try running it when I'm on-site on Tues. I hope to report success. Thanx again Noel for kind assistance....

Yep - CheckSUR at least is happy.

Did SFC find errors when you ran it? - the log isn't in your CBS upload.
Running another SFC may be a good idea to check that there aren't any file problems hiding in the mass of errors that the now-fixed problems caused.

Noel: More goodness, no log from SFC. Ran it before the fix and it didn't report anything, then ran it after your suggestion, so we're looking good here.

I'm getting really antsy about whether this works or not, so I think I'll try the update remotely tomorrow, so I mite have one more chance at a consult via the forum before my trip to the client site. Thanx again....
