Is it possible to get more out of your graphics card?

I ask people on forums sometimes before I buy games, will this run well on max settings? They always say yes, you will be fine. My system is this:

Quad Core Q9000
Geforce GT 240m 1GB Vram
4GB Ram
Win 7 64 Bit Premium

For example, Dragonage doesn't run well at 1600x900 max, yet I'm told it would (Anti Aliasing off). Just wondering if there are settings I can tweak or do something to get more out of my card?

Each game has different requirements. In many cases, the GPU is the major player.

Dragon Age however, benefits mostly from Raw CPU speed, and quad cores. It does still require a decent GPU.

The system Req:
Minimum (Vista): Core 2 duo with 1.6 GHz or Athlon 64 X2 with 2.2 GHz, 1536 MB RAM, Geforce 7600 GT or Radeon X1550 with 256 MB, 20 GB disc space

Recommended: Core 2 Quad with 2.4 GHz (or comparable AMD CPU), 2048 MB RAM (XP), 4096 MB RAM (Vista), Geforce 8800 GTS or Radeon HD 3850 with 512 MB

Is this a laptop?
Most laptops arent really built for gaming. Although capable, the really arent meant to play everything at MAX settings, especially newer gamers.
It doesnt look as if youll be able to pull off Max settings. Med maybe.

Beyond that, youll be very limited as to what you can do. Ocing perhaps, but I would strongly discourage it with a lappy.

When you game you could disable the tasks and services you don't need in task manager.

If your goal is to run your games on max settings, regardless of the game, then you should build yourself a dedicated gaming machine; complete with a high end cpu and gpu. You're never going to find satisfaction with a laptop.

Probably what most people skip when recommending is the little "m" after the 240 on your card.

Well not exactly under 2K but if you time it right you might find one in the Outlet Store on occasion, the Alienware M17x laptop if that is what you want/need has a lot of followers. If it's a desktop you want then that changes things a lot as there are many options for that price point.

Overclocking would give you more, but it is a BAD idea on a laptop, and usually not very effective.

I think you would be better off with a desktop for gaming as you can upgrade at your leisure, with a laptop you are restricted in so many ways.

additionally for shutting down unnecessary processes when gaming you could use gamebooster i used to use it on vista when i had a lower spec system
