Ripping DVDs is not as easy as it sounds... Not at all, and any "pro" will tell you that. "One click", "easy" multiformat converters are all crap, every single one, if you want a good ~ 700MB rip, because you need to apply a lot compression to both the audio and video streams while saving as much quality as you can. There's a lot to learn about this technology if you want to do it on your own.
I mean, it's not necessary, but that just means that you'll never really be able to get a good quality rip for only 700MB per file... even if you're using the H264 codec in an MKV container.

Not to mention that the ~700 MB size was "historically" only picked to fit one movie onto a single CD. (That was before DVDs were available or still too expensive ;) Now that DVD blancs are freely available and rather cheap, (as well as big hard drives) I don't see any reason to sacrifice quality for storage space anymore. Others than that I agree with the posts above: There is no "One Click does it all" with perfect results. I mean what might be acceptable for a clip that's to be watched on an ipod or a phone (a rediculous idea in my eyes :) is certainly unbearable on any decent screen. Especially if you try to convert any material that has been converted/shrunk before (like mpg, avi, flv etc.)

If you use Metafox (download it from my tools page), it will extract the audio/video streams from almost any container (avi, m2ts, flv etc) and place those contents into a MKV.

To use it, just install it. It places a shortcut on your desktop. Drag and Drop any file to the shortcut, it automatically makes the MKV in the originating folder.

EDIT: you will need my Win7codecs installed for formats like FLV to extract properly.

mkv is not a format, it's a container.
Matroska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

is there a reason you want an mkv?

not really I was just wondering if its possible to have quality of 700MB DVD movie in avi format saved in mkv without losing quality

Yes.
Just use MKVmuxer to remux the video and Audio stream into a MKV container.

But why?

Depending on the length of the movie, 700MB is very small, and likely of poor quality in the first place.

A MKV container will not help what so ever here.
As mentioned its just a container. AVI, MKV, MP4 etc are all containers.
Much like a envelope. It just holds the video and audio.

MKV is good for certain file types, or even multiple files types in one conatiner.
For Example x264 Video and Dolby Digtial Audio.
And at 700MB, I seriously doubt its using DD or DTS.

Theres nothing to be gained ny swapping the container to MKV (in terms of quality)

As long as you don't have to re-code, the pure "wrapping" into a container doesn't affect the quality.
Rule of thumb: if the process is done within 5 or ten minutes, you'e safe ;)

I had this idea to fit as many as possible on 2GB flash drive. My cousin who lives in Poland asked if i knew any good movies I recommended few gave Him links to download but his internet speed is terrible so I had this 2GB flash drive I don't use anymore decided to convert the movies to mkv and fit as many as possible. i already converted Brooklyn's Finest to mkv it has 546MB

Well, actually... In certain cases I found out that muxing with mkvmerge video+audio+subtitles results in a very slight pixelated effect because of the softsusbs, which is totally weird because that effect is gone if I exclude the subs xD
Though I think it only happens in MPC-HC
