Is it possible to remove 'Cut' from Win 7 context menu?

I was wondering whether it is possible to remove the 'Cut' entry from the Windows 7 right-click context menu. If so, how would I do this?

Do you want this for all context menus or of some specific application? Many applications have a context menu with a cut entry and ultimately it is the application that controls their own context menus, usually with no options for customization. I don't see this as being a practical thing for general use. For a specific application - maybe.

I suppose this could be done with some heavy duty and difficult programming but the results would be very fragile. I mention this only as a matter of interest, not as a practical proposition.

Because so much in Windows can be changed many people get the impression that virtually everything can be customized. That is NOT the case.

My advice would be to give up on this idea. For most applications there is no practical way to do this.

I don't know of any way, via registry or program to remove the default context menu commands (cut, copy, delete , rename).

Most handlers are located in

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

But not the default windows commands. I don't think it is even possible with Group Policy. You can for applications, and browsers, but not windows itself. That said, as mentioned, perhaps there is a workaround for the reason you have. A Guy

pardon me for playing devils advocate - but how could his reasoning have any bearing on whether its possible or not? either it is - or it isnt?

Just popping in due to looking for the same thing. My reasoning is the fact im super OCD/Anal and like things as simple and clean looking as can be attained. I dont forsee myself ever using Cut when I have Copy available. It would technically present an extra "step" required in some situations but the tradeoff for one less item in the context menu is a no brainer for me

That all being said, the ones I am stuck with (cant find a way to remove) it seems are :

1) Cut
2) Open (i can open things by double clicking so the open/merge command is unnecessary redundency at its finest)
3) Preview
4) Rotate Left/Right
5) This ones a Doozy! The "Open in New Window" entry. I have found out how to remove it but each and every time it completely breaks my File Explorer shortcut in the taskbar. It throws a "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action" error. This can only be reversed/resolved by re-adding the Open in New Window here entry to the context menu as far as ive been able to tell.

Gah!

Thats about all of em. If i can get rid of even one or two of those I'll be satisifed to a much greater degree than I am now.

ive come SO far yet stuck/stopped short of being satisfied with my context menu. Its one of those all or nothing things it appears.

It doesn't. We don't think it's possible. But if he has a specific reason, we may be able to help him in another way. If his reason is similar to yours, just wanting to remove it, then we'd have no alternative

Look at ShellMenuView for Preview, and possibly some Open. Rotate might be added by your image viewing program, and may show as well. Your choices will differ from mine, and anyone else's.

Well...I wanted to avoid third party software if possible, however courtesy of your reply im going to assume that it isnt. In that case, Ill have to submit persay

As for rotate... The integrated windows photo viewer uses that I assume. I do run the adobe suite so assuming I have another photo/media viewer (now that I think of it i think VLC can view photos too) is their a way to remove the windows photo viewer software and by association remove those options?

When viewing a photo, what program is called by pressing rotate? Or does the picture just rotate? If it is placed by a 3rd party program, either ShellMenuView, or ShellExView should list it. A Guy
