Is it worth me buying an AV?

Hello, I just joined SF, and quite recently updated my OS to Windows 7 Pro, and learnt that norton 360 2.0 isn't compatible (I had about 3 months left). Right now I've got the free version of COMODO firewall and AV.

2 questions, should I ever buy an antivirus/360 styled product ever again and a lot of people recommend MSE on here, and I see hardly anybody talking about COMODO, which one should I be using?

Welcome!

Personally, I don't see a need to purchase anti-virus software. MSE is a very good AV, and my favorite. Avast is also very good.

Now MSE is not a firewall. Personally, I only use the built-in Windows firewall, but if you have a different opinion, Comodo is a good third-party firewall.

Here is a link for MSE: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

Good luck!

In your opinion, do you rate the Windows firewall over the Comodo one?

It depends on how you rate it. Performance wise, the Windows firewall takes the cake, because it is built-in to the OS. Third-party programs are extra.

So the Windows firewall will not affect boot times and the like, at least noticeably.

Security wise, I imagine Comodo will be better. I have never used it, but why else would it exist?

If you use a router, the router firewall will be your first defense anyhow. After that, the windows firewall should suffice. And MSE is my favorite too.

You probably will not notice a performance difference per se (unless you have a really slow machine), but as with any program loading on startup, you may notice slightly longer load times.

I am a long term Comodo user, so I may be biased.

I Started with just the firewall then that plus the defense plus, with Avast 4.x as AV.
I have recently just finished a six month test of Comodo Internet Security on win7 x64, and found the whole package to be fast and secure.

I am now back to the Comodo Firewall/D+ with the New Avast 5.x as I am testing Avast.

I can state that both options are good secure systems, though some may find that Comodo is a little "in your face" for their liking - I personally like to know what is going on on my systems so Comodo suits me.

I don't use any anti-virus. I only go to maybe a dozen sites that are safe. I never have a problem with email.
In fact I've seen more problem with malware (on my friends computers) then viruses.
I do use opendns. I love how I can filter content that comes into my house.

Wise decision. I would go with the vanilla firewall. It seems to do the job (and I do not even have a router at this location). On the performance question I have no clue since I never used comodo.

As for my previous question I think after my 30 day trial runs out I will get the option to activate my product key, kudos to all that helped. :D I never thought I'd be back on Norton 360 when I posted this :D

And in the beginning Comodo is really intrusive, you have to screen basically every single process, until the program learns which processes are allowed. Then it happens again when you install any program because of reg edits and any internet access the program may have. But after Comodo gets used to you, I thought it was good enough.

If I remember right from my Norton days, you have to go to your account to enter the product key. Unfortunately my only Norton system left is some 5000 miles away from here, so I cannot try it out and give you more detailed guidance. But if you go to the Symantec chat room, they may be able to tell you.

I have never heard of anyone using Comodo for anything other than firewall. The AV probably isn't on any top list IIRC.

You can get MSE. I use it and highly recommend it. Hasn't failed me yet either.

The thing i like about comodo firewall is defence+. I have it set in parental control to suppress all firewall and defence+ alerts so you don't get nagged and it prevents other users from accidentally clicking yes to everything. If there is something I want to allow to run and connect to the net I create a new rule for it :)

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Personally, I recommend going with Microsoft Security Essentials over a paid alternative. The greatest protection against malware is common sense, and as long as you have that, a free AV should be plenty. :)
