Solved Is my computer/Windows toast? Not sure what is wrong

Aplogies if in wrong section.
Friend got my to check my event log after running some scans and they came up with nothing (cmd etc) A little timeline as I am not sure what is relevant.
I am not that tech savvy so am not sure if it is a hardware problem or a problem with the Windows Software. My computer was working as normal a few days ago, catching up on some shows then no dice.
I have run all malicious scans also.

Lots of alerts for Bonjour

last night I got a pop up error message that says "external component has thrown and exception"

I would give this a shot: do a system scan for integrity violations by clicking start, programs, accessories; system tools; then right click on command prompt and click run as administrator; and type sfc /scannow to get the system to scan and hopefully fix any issues. Give that a shot and see what happens.

I tried scannow and that was ok, well yesterday it was (used search,cmd as shortcut ) will try again anyway.
I have since tried a chkdsk and I can only get to 15% of part 3 of 5.
I use malwarebytea anti-malware, not fancy I know and only got that recently and it cleaned a bunch of stuff up including a Trojan
I did get a pop up asking me if I wanted mbam.exe (mentions hardware)to make changes while I am trying to get something rolling (any scan)
The computer now takes forever to so simple tasks. Can I run these scans in safe mode?

Edit- I opened in safe mode with command prompt. It actually was not doing anything in regular mode.
No integrity issues came up.

Well I guess it's toast now because it now will not startup properly. Will run the repair tomorrow. Unfortunately my system is not backed up (don't have an external) but will be somewhere I can buy one tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to get in long enough to save my files. The photos etc I won't miss that's much (always kept sd cards) but will want a couple of documents I did not save. Doh.

If your system is that badly screwed up, you might want to do a clean reinstall rather than a repair. But only if you can rescue your files first.

Yes, I think you are right. I was not able to get through a back up stopped at 38% although my external drive has more than enough space (I have not been able to do one before, lack of space most likely, did not have an external)
I was able to F8 to safe mode this morning and rescue a few docs, I will copy pics and things like that when I get home. All the other stuff can always be gotten again. Music inventory spring clean.

Before reinstalling I will attempt to update my drivers, I have a feeling it is something to this effect that is screwing things up. I read its best to update them through computer manufacturer and not the Windows drivers? I have also not viewed the drivers but that might tell me what is not working properly. Same for RAM.
Its been a learning curve but at least I will know how to better look after my computer in the future.

Failing that, I guess I will have a near factory restored computer. And hopefully that clean slate will work.

Sometimes it is easier and quicker to follow Mellon Head's suggestions of a clean install instead of trying to track down the problem. But first I would recover all my files and run your hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool to make sure there are no problems with the hard drive. Also, on a clean install, be sure to only have the hard drive you are installing the OS on connected during the install in case you have more than one. I would also download all drivers from the manufacturers web site to a USB drive before starting. Have all of your installation disks and activation numbers on hand and any installer programs for software you would like to install. This will make it much easier and quicker. I have found that a little forethought goes a long way to make a clean install not such a big deal.

Thank you that was very good advice. I have a dm3 notebook so no discs. If I won't be able to access the Internet and get what I need from the HP/Microsoft websites I'll prob have to resort to giving it to a "computer guy"
I am having difficulty getting all my images onto USB. It gets only to 5% I may be trying to send too much information at a time.
I hate to admit defeat but as long as I can get the rest of the files (usually have them but recently changed phone providers and new sim wiped my phOne, ouch!)
"system volume on disk corrupt" windows explorer has stopped working(on occasion)

If you don't have another computer, ask to borrow a friend's computer tp download drivers and such. Most would be glad to help you. You could also put them on a CD or DVD, if you have one You can leave them compressed until you finish the new install, if need be. a "computer technician" would charge you more than Windows 7 costs just to install Windows. Follow the instructions in the links Mellon Head posted and it should go very easily. Just try to check the hard drive first with the manufacturers diagnostic tool. Don't install any of the bloat programs most manufacturers give you. If you are having no other hardware issues, the links provided by Mellon Head will have your computer running better than when it was new when finished. If you can afford an SSD, you will think you bought a new computer. It really isn't difficult. If you can make the proper preparations the installer will do most of the rest. If you go the SSD route, you can use the current hard drive for Backups and storage and get your files off after the install. Well I had the option to set the computer back to the start (seeing as I had no restore points) I had saved what I wanted, and went for it. I didn't need disks etc as all the information was stored on the D: drive. The computer pretty much did it for me and I just configured what I wanted installed as it asked (ie windows essentials options)

I have a normally working computer again. I still had trouble with HP assist on start up, and could not download more up to date drivers from the website although I could update HP assistant and then it downloaded them for me.

If anyone gets stuck on "gathering information" I would suggest going to the website and downloading it again.
