That's where we get into the sharing of information. I'm giving you an example of how Upgrade Advisor is misleading. If I didn't know any better, I would have assumed my anti-virus software and both of my network printers weren't compatible with Windows 7, and stayed with Windows XP. Upgrade Advisor also doesn't tell me if I have enough memory for the system to run well. It can only go by the posted minimums. if Upgrade Advisor never let you down, then most likely you've told quite a few people not to install Windows 7 who would have had no issue running it.

There is simply no substitute for a list of specs. It's almost like using WebMD to diagnose medical conditions (Upgrade Advisor) and a replacement for just going to see a doctor from the beginning. You'll still need to consult the specs once you run Upgrade Advisor anyway....so why not jump there first?

I didn't bring up XP - It's the original OS for the laptop and mentioned in the OP's opening post.

Now I have offered a sincere apology if you think my way is wrong - I'm big enough to do that.

It's not the need to know nothing, it's about a starting point - And for me, in the absence of specs it would be upgrade advisor - Then yes I would investigate in more detail. Upgrade advisor has never let me down - But as I have only run it on machines without networked printers, personally I have never had the issue, but we learn from others.

It's about resolving the OP's question and we have different ways of achieving the same answer - how can that be wrong??

It wasn't just network printers, by the way. It was often local printers that would show up as being incompatible.

They don't arrive at the same answer...that's my point from the beginning. Upgrade Advisor isn't going to come back and tell you that 1 GB of memory is going to be very limiting. I've also never come across a report from Upgrade Advisor that gives details about a system's graphics card and it's Aero abilities. That's why, if you read any thread on this subject, the first and primary thing people ask for is system specs. If you can't come up with system specs, you aren't rady to be considering an operating system change anyway.

I've said it before, and I'll reiterate. If you run an Upgrade Advisor report, it tells you very little, and what it does actually tell you is most likely misleading. That's just the way it is. It was a great idea in theory, but the tool is mostly useless in actual execution.

It's not about apologies, or right or wrong. It's about getting the most concise information to give the user the best possible answer. With Upgrade Advisor, there are still a lot of unknowns and questions. With a list of system specs, there's no guessing.

It's simple to me. If somebody wants to look all over this site to find the OP system specs, enjoy yourself. I'm not going to. If someone wants to Google for the specs, go for it. I'm not going to when all the OP has to do is complete their specs as requested. A car mechanic can't help you over the internet fix your car if he/she doesn't know what kind of car you have. One request should be all that is needed.
Just go to User CP at the top of every page and fill in your specs, DONE.

windows 7 upgrade advisor

I ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor and the only problem it said i had was that i had
512 mb of ram and i think u need to have 1gb of ram.

So my question is simply, will windows 7 truly work even though i don't have 1gb of ram?

It would probably install, but I doubt it would be usable. Depending on the memory type you need, it can be dirt cheap. However, the older the memory, the more expensive it will be. If it is DDR2 as suggested, it can be cheap. If it is DDR, then you might be looking at a lot more money. I'd consider an upgrade anyway, because 512 would be painful with any recent OS.

I think you've made the right decision. Windows 7 with only 512Mb of RAM would be a big disappointment to you.
