Hi.

I am running windows 7 home premium with a 5.9 experience score.

All was going well, loving win 7 etc, until I restored my pc to an earlier date after experiencing problems with itunes 10 (damn you apple).

After restoration, most of the PC still runs as normal (very quick) but certain functions seem to have developed problems, for example...

  • The recycling bin simply takes an age to to delete even a few small files.
  • Windows takes another age to discover the contents of my 'My Book' Western Digital external hard drive.
  • When I try to change the personalisation features, switch to another theme etc, it freezes.
  • Various other system freezes that require task manager quits.
I have tried to restore to a few different points in time, but to no effect.

Can anyone please help me with this as it driving me nuts!!

Thanks all.

Ps - on a related issue, could I un-install my WD external drive and try to re-install without affecting the data stored on it?

I know you will say back it up first, but there is about 300GB on there and my computer would take a couple of years to transfer that at the mo!!!

Thanks again...

A few things you can try before taking drastic steps.

1) Run a MBAM scan and let it remove what it wants to.

2) Update all drivers.

3) Run an SFC scan.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

4) Check whether your problems persist in safe mode. If they dont its a 3rd party driver conflict.

---------------------------------

Hi Bill2.

Thanks for your advice...

Ran the MBAM scan all ok...

Drivers seem to be in order?? (not sure though see below)

SFC scan picked up some errors, but could not fix? - tried to get the details on this but it would not work? Maybe I typed the prompt wrong?

I have no issues in safe mode, (thanks for this tip) so I guess it has to be a driver conflict right? Is there a way that I could pinpoint the problem quickly?

Is there a scan for this?

All of your fantastic help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Dave.

Hi Tews...

This sounds like the best option - thanks for your advice.

However I have a problem, as I upgraded via an upload and therefore have no disc?

What are my options from here?

Thanks all for your continuing advice on this.

You have two options: you can borrow a Win 7 CD from a friend and use it to do a repair install; or you can create a repair disk following this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html. I would suggest option #2. Look at the bottom of the tutorial page for related tutorials. I would create a Windows installation disk if it were me.

I hope you have a validated, legitimate copy of Win 7.

Hi CarlTR6

Thanks for your fantastic advice.

A couple of questions, before I go ahead and try this - sorry if this seems silly...

"Using the System Repair Disc that you have created below, you can boot to the system recovery options"

Which of these options would I then use to fix Windows 7?

Is system recovery the same as system repair?

Please check my problems I am having with windows ( in the original thread above ) - is this the right fix for these problems?

Just checking before I go ahead as I am confused as to where I go once I hit those system recovery options.

Thanks.

Hi all...

Thanks for the continuing help...

here is where I am at...

I think I need a repair install (based on the learned advice from above), but I have no win 7 disc as it was form an upgrade via the web.

How can I achieve the repair without one? Is it possible? Can I do it via the web again?

I really do not want to do a fresh install as I have mucho programs and info!!

I have read about each system repair option below and none seem to fix my problems...

All help here greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi.

Is this really my only option? I have already paid for win 7 - can I do this via oem or win 7 download (as I have bought legit first)? I do not want to have to pay £100 to buy the disk?

Do you have an install disc already?

no, no win7 disc - can i not repair install from web upgrade (half the cost of official disc)?

Or download free from peer to peer - as I have product key?

You will want to do a startup repair unless you have a system image you can restore.

Since you have a product key, you can download and create a disk. Be careful about downloading from peer to peer. You do not want a hacked copy or one loaded with nasties. Your best bet would be to borrow a CD from a friend.
