Is overclocking depending on Mainboard?

Some people can overclock their CPU up to 4.0GHz+ but mine is only 3.5Ghz. I wonder if my Mainboard is not good at overclocking.

It depends on cpu temperature aka cooling, and all chips are diffrent even if they come from the same batch, But the motherboard is also important. if your motherhood is not powerfull or good enough it wont let you go very far, please ask z3r010 to move this to the overclocking section

the main limiting factor in overclocking is the cooling system. Stock cooler is ok for normal operation, but it is completely inadequate for overclocking, especially if you live in hot places. I know of (slightly desperate) people that put the PC in a small fridge to get better overclocks, but the best thing you can do is buying a powerful CPU cooler.

If you need more info on CPU coolers, just ask.

Then there are other limits, like the CPU could be less-perfect than others, thus will not be able to run overclocked too much, motherboards are less of an issue for CPUs that have unlocked multipliers.

Was discarded by previous owner due to "horrible performance".
Was running Win Xp from a IDE drive. Yeah. Was a pain.
SATA II drive and Win7 and it zips away! Yay!
Some higher-end motherboards have more features built in for overclocking, and even then, some overclock better than others, but they are rarely the reason why you can't reach a certain clock speed.
