Is the kb976932 update really that important?

Hi everyone, I have been having problems installing the kb976932 update for weeks now. I feel like I tried everything. Im about ready to take a sledge hammer to this thing!

My main question, is this really that important?

I am mainly trying to install a printer to my computer which is unsuccessful and one of the troubleshooting suggestion by the printer manufacturer is to make sure the Windows updates are installed. Idk if this could be the problem or not.

This is Service Pack 1, so it very well could be the answer. I'm not saying that it is because I can't know.

You will want either windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe (32-bit) or windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe (64-bit) depending on whether you have 32-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit. Be cautious because there's one named windows6.1-KB976932-IA64.exe. That is for Itanium 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2.

RTM Windows 7 (i.e. the original release version without SP1) is effectively out of support already - which means that it only gets Security updates, not performance tweaks, etc. It's also possible that the AV companies will soon stop fully supporting it in the same way that this happened with Vista RTM and SP1 some time ago - with the result that strange things began to happen when an AV was upgraded or changed.

The SP1 install is therefore VERY important- if for no other treason than those. It also has a few minor tweaks not found in the general updates. Getting it properly installed also ensures that your system is able to install later updates, since if SP1 fails, then the chances are that some of the updates themselves will be failing.

An alternative method to get it installed may be a repair/upgrade installation using media with SP1 embedded.

Tom and you appear to be very close to a resolution of your problems - I'd suggest plugging away at it a while longer yet. You won't believe the feeling of satisfaction you'll get when it finally works!
