Solved Is installing service pack 1 really that important?

I currently have all my updates current except for service pack 1 and I feel my systes is pretty doggone smooth these days.

Questions:

1.) Will upgrading to service pack 1 potentially make my system any slower because of extra stuff added I don't really need?

2.) Is it important to install service pack one and why?

SP1 doesn't really add anything to your system but replaces a lot of files with updated versions. SP1 contains over 600 fixes to Windows 7. Most of these were not offered though windows update. So I think it is a good idea to instlall SP1.

It becomes a part of the OS so eventually it must be installed or it will be forced, possibly as long as until SP2 arrives.

If you worry about losing performance, save a Win7 backup image before updating to SP1 to check performance afterward. I have seen no difference except on one install where it seemed to get peppier.

It sounds like you aren't sure of what a service pack is, especially in this case. It doesn't add new features or slow down your computer. It applies security fixes and patches that most would deem necessary, me included.

You're minor issues are not typical, and are likely unrelated to SP1. SP1 is perfectly safe.

Installed service pack 1 and I can see no issue thus far

Glad to hear it is running ok Rolodman. I suspect we are all wary of service packs since the XP SP3 debacle and problems it had. For me, I install all important and critical MS updates, but wait a couple of weeks on new Service Packs to see others' experiences with them.
EDIT: My Pc has had no ill effects with SP1 and seems to run faster, it reboots in 66-79 seconds.

Aside from some initial problems loading SP1 from Windows Update, i think most people have few problems, nor notice any performance change whatsoever from installing service pack 1.

Consider this, with prior releases of Windows...some people would NOT install or use the operating system until Service Pack 1 was released. It was like this with Vista and XP.

I agree, i don't see any performance change
