Is Windows 7 tweaking itself?

after i installed build 7264 x64 as an upgrade to 7229 i found this:
-in the first days, my system used about 1,8 gb of ram, now it is at 1,4 gb without having changed something
- the system responds faster after some days
- it seems to have tweaked and optimized itself during the last few days
after the upgrade i had tried the usual optimizations as defragmentation, cleaning unused files from the upgrade and so on.
did anybody else find something like that?
i find this a great feature!

I usually find that after the first couple of days it seems to speed up and becomes more responsive, I think it has allot to do with indexing.

You're onto something there. When not running the 32bit RC for a period of time constantly booting into the 64bit the power options settings tend to forget themselves where each startup means setting the turn off display to never over and over again. On the host 64bit RC booted into daily that problem simply "vanished" from regular use!

The file indexing would seem to better organize the system's own access to regularly used files like those for Windows itself. The SuperFetch in Vista preceeded by the PreFetch in XP has been improved in 7. That preloads the drive maintainence tools in low key to run in the background keeping the fragmentation level down as well to 0%! Self maintaining OS to some degree.

I would caution against removing superfetch in windows 7. I looks to be more closely integrated than in previous versions.

I am worried about my SSD. Superfetch is off. I hope if I have problems I can just turn it on again. With an SSD my system is very responsive but they have problems as we all know. I hope it's different with this bunch.

I have read this and many more like it. I assume you have to run WEI before Windows makes these changes because I didn't see them made. I had to turn them off myself. This is with the RC. Maybe things will be different with RTM. I wish it would let you know. "Windows knows you have an SSD and it is making the correct changes" That would be nice.

Nothing here say to remove superfetch.
The link show the opposite: keep Superfetch ON!

The system (via superfetch and other mecanism) can adapt itself to your usage.
When you use your computer the system analyse what you done, which software you use, when you use them.
Superfetch is able to make the difference between software most used on the week and those used on the Week-end, in example.

So dont worry, the memory usage is totally dynamic and will vary all over the time

Turning SuperFetch off was a stupid idea people had when they thought Vista was taking too long to start up. Always leave it on!

Windows 7 has vastly improved SuperFetch anyway though.

Yes I have done the same as well and I dont think that indexing function is used by the system itself to make loading up certain files for the operating system any faster.

It has the usual indexing, so that speeds things up. As NightHawk mentioned, it does background defragging. All of that ultimately keeps the overhead down.

Windows Indexing Service has nothing to do with Defrag which runs on its own schedule. Mine runs on Wednesdays @ 1am which I believe is the default. The problem is if one keeps installing a new build every other day them maybe it will never run .

The SuperFetch itself is the improved form of Windows memory management and sadly mistook by many in Vista. Since the preload of the most often used programs into memory was seen as more memory being chewed up when viewed in the task manager's performance tab everyone assumed 2gb was too little for the verage desktop.

The drive maintainence part of all that running quietly in the background usually goes unnoticed until you look and wonder why there's no longer any large fragmentation seen there and now with 7. But that comes with the price of using a little more memory while using it a little more efficiently.

The two articles sum things up rather well for the improvements to be seen in 7 regard the SuperFetch and SSDs. Like I was saying before about the problem with the power options setting seen reverting to the defaults on each startup that would fit into the "adjustment to user pattern" analogy when now seeing the personal setting not to see the dispay turned off in so many minutes but the never setting.

The host 7 install is now remembering that while the other two installations(1=64bit, 1=32bit) always seem to forget from not being booted into on a daily basis. Note each installation has the exact same programs installed with the same startups while the host install is showing adjustments there to the patterns of personal usage as if 7 is displaying an adaptive memory.
