Is Windows Update a Virus

Did a System Restore on my PC three times. But after a "Windows Update" my PC starts misbehaving again. Reckon my Hard Drive might be infected. PC had or still has a seroius virus or Trojan or maybe even a rootkit.
A NASTY piece of work this. It disables keyboard. Power off the PC sporadically.

If you think its a virus/malware infection have you ran any scans? If so what did they say? Why did you have to do a system restore in the first place? Was something going wrong? If so, what? Have you ran a system file check? It will look for and possibly repair any corrupt system files. Here's a link to our tutorial on how to do that if you haven't before :

To answer your question , no windows update is not a virus.

Have ran several scans. MacAfee, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Microsft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes,Avira, Avast. All showed up clear.
Did a System Restore because this NASTY kept opening Windows Library and sometimes Windows Media Player and disabling the keyboard and even powering off the PC randomly

Even tried Kaspersky Rescue Disc and Bitdefender Rescue Disk

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,, you don't have all those on your system at the same time do you? Hopefully not but if so, choose one and get rid of the others. One A/V per machine is the mantra. Have you tried running any of them in safe mode?

It really doesn't sound like a virus/malware to me but its possible I guess. Did/have you tried the system file check?

Thanks bty. No I did not have all them A/Vs on my system at the same time. I forgot Windows Defender which is the only one I have right now after my latest System Restore. Didn't do a Sytem File Check.

PC keeps shutting down even in Safe Mode.
BTW This correspondence is being carried out on a different older PC

Have you tested the PSU? Or considered a repair install? It will save all your stuff and just repair any damage done to Windows. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Try the sfc/scannow first if possible.

Thanks for the info. Indianacarnie. Unfortunately I couldn't perform the above tasks because the PC keeps
powering off even in Safe Mode
So it's back to the drawing board for me

Hi Giggidy,
Most forum Security experts agree that rootkits can never really be eradicated on an OS.
The advice is, a clean the drive, using something like diskpart and then re-install the OS

Thanks Roy for your help Roy. But unfortunately the process failed. The PC keeps shutting down. And the nasty virus disables my keyboard.
So I am just going to give up and get a new hard drive or maybe even a new processor

Before buying hard-ware, what did the computer do before doing that round of Windows Updates? I ask because a certain update or two pretty much "totaled the operatibility" of my Windows 7 Pro. Thankfully, I had a recent OS partition full image made before that round of WU. After that, WU was very very carefully one-by-one-one conducted by me.

Hi Roland. The PC was operating fine until WU. Then Windows Explorer (Library) started opening by itself and disabling the keyboard and powering off the PC.
That's why I was wondering if WU was a virus
