Solved Issue with XFX 5670 1 GB

Hello everyone!

i am a new member. i recently bought a xfx 5670 hd 1 gb card....it works fine when i am watching movies or any thing else. but as soon as i play any game (mind it any game AOE even) i get a black screen. i have updated BIOS, reinstalled OS, installed latest drivers, checked the card in a diffferent machine (its working fine)......i checked the temp....35-45 normal and 50-65 in load.

anything else i must be doing.......please help...

Try going to Microsoft.com and downloading DirectX. (Unless you've done that already)

Hello archer. Welcome to the forum.

If you are confident that the video drivers were installed clean and the video card works in another machine then the next most logical causes could be :

RAM - Run Memtest Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
You can also test for a bad memory module by installing one stick in Slot 1 and testing, and then switch it out for the next stick, etc.

Power Supply - 450 watts is marginal for a high end video card. How many amps does it supply on the 12 volt rail? If it is an older supply it could be even more questionable. They get weaker as they get older.

Check your connections. Reseat video card and memory modules. Make sure the contacts are clean. Check all the electrical connections.

Overheating: Is the case and all the parts dust-free? If you take the side(s) off the case (and maybe blow a house fan into the case) and run the games does the issue improve?

Are you overclocking anything? This includes a factory overclock of the video card.

Try those and let us know what you find.

Do you have access to a better PSU to try , I personnally think the PSU you are currently using is underpowered for the graphic card you are using

please correct me if i am wrong, i thought this card do not require heavy PSU.....as i mentioned earlier i tried the card in a different machine and that machine has 450W PSU (mine is same).....i have taken 1 DIMM off my mobo and now my fingers are crossed...........i will update the outcome

All ads for that card I looked at had similar specs:

XFX Radeon HD 5670 System Requirements

• PCI Express compliant motherboard with one X16 graphics slot
• 400 Watt or greater power supply recommended (500 Watt for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
• Certified power supplies are recommended.
• Minimum 1GB of system memory

Thanks all for your replies and suggestions! i just tried removing 1 dimm from my mobo and running on single channel. disabled the onboard graphic card, did a fresh win7 install and whallla i am able to play now without any issues.......... either it was bad memory or the driver issue.

i am happy now

Well, according to your post, you did 3 things at once:

• Ran on 1 stick of RAM
• Disabled the onboard graphics
• And installed W7 fresh

So which one of these solved the problem? It's hard to tell when you do it like that. (Or maybe you know something that we don't - yet )

What I would do is assume the fresh install was the solution.
There is no need for the on board graphics to be activated, and that alone could have been the cause of a driver conflict.
Therefore I would think you could reinstall the RAM and test to see if the behavior returns.

If it does, then buy new RAM. If you can't find the exact same model of RAM to match the other working stick then it would be best to by a matched pair (or set).

Let us know what you find.

I would use same exact ram that is working now and make sure you test each slot that is the best way to assure performance i actually had that same card from the jump i had a 400watt psu and my machine wouldnt start with that card i recoommend 450 to 500 watt for general performance

You got it fixed now so i would concentrate on getting the same exact ram that is working now to increase the performance also be a good thing to look up vendors prefered list and maybe go with what they recomend for the board save alot of time and trouble

so, i tested with 2 dimms and same thing........ATI drivers ahs stopped responding and has recovered. Ran on one dimm and i am able to play without any glitches. so now i know my RAM is faulty. thanks all for you help
