Issues installing Windows Updates and using Internet Explorer

I am trying to get my Windows 7 system to install updates, but the Windows Update screen keeps saying "Checking for updates". Basically, its taking it forever to install updates. Also, Internet Explorer does not work right. Internet Explorer keeps freezing up. I am trying to upgrade it to Windows 10 for my brother.

Someone's help would be greatly appreciated!

I have already ran SFC/ SCANNOW and it found no issues. I reset Windows Update components and that didn't fix the issue either.

Jesse, there is nothing you can do about windows update, it is a known problem that has been going on for months.

Do not make a bunch of changes to your computer.

It is nothing to worry about.

Try your updates on a Saturday.

Mine took until 9:26 PM Wednesday night to download and install Tuesday`s updates.

Of course I did not have Windows Update running all that time, but it did take until now for them to finally download and install.

I installed the June rollup update a couple of weeks ago:

The rollup update includes KB3161647 that has this fix

An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers.

Last month it took over 6 hours to check for PT updates.
This month it took a couple of minutes to check for PT updates.

Another problem that I am having is that Internet Explorer will not load any websites for me to download anything.

I haven't used IE in ages. Do other browsers work ok?

Why don't you just start using other browser if IE doesn't work?

As for the search being stuck for hours, try this:

Set Windows to Never check for updates.

Make sure wuauserv is not running in the background eating your CPU . If it does, just stop the service.

Download and install KB3168965.

Restart and set Windows to Check for updates but let me choose what to install.

Click search for updates.

Let it search for 1-2 hours. Should come up with results.

Well, for now Internet Explorer is my only choice to download anything and I can't download anything with it not working.

If you have access to another PC and a USB flash stick, you could download a portable browser to the flash stick and try that on your PC.

Why would you want to go to windows updates to have the updates.

You need to change you setting in windows updates.

Go to Windows update page.
Select "Change settings" on the left panel.
Select "Install updates automatically (recommended)"
Make sure that your selection on the timing is when you are using your PC.
--The reason is that if you have turn off the PC during that period of time, updates may not check by itself.
As for these setting;
(1) Recommended updates (2) Who can install this updates; ensure these 2 have a tick mark on the box.
As for Microsoft Updates --unless you are using Microsoft products, which i do not, but still leave a tick mark.
The last option --Software notification-- also an option (i leave a blank).

I do not do it manual, as the setting take care of everything.
Do note on the date/time, which the PC should be turn on.

When i do Shutdown, if the updates are downloaded, it will say the "Updates before Shutdown"
Do it, even if you are just want to restart /reboot.

Just a few days ago, the PC stated to do updates.
After shutdown and then turn on, there are 20K++ settings are updating, for just a few minutes.
After complete, i do a shutdown and then turn on.
This is to ensure everything are in normal, plus for safety reason, i did a create a restore point, just in case.

Your decision.

My brother is not as computer savvy as I am. So, here's what I did. I fixed all of the issues by updating it to Windows 10 by going through the Media Creation Tool. I put him an antivirus on to keep him protected. Today, I will work on getting it optimized by following some tutorials on Windows 10 Forums. Thanks for all of the help guys! It looks like Microsoft may be forgetting about Windows 7 and focusing on Windows 10, hence all of the update problems.

Another question. My grandmother has Windows XP. She is basically wanting to know if her computer will support Windows 10. I told her maybe, but you may run into some driver issues. She also asked about how much Windows 10 costs to buy it. I told her I would find out the price today and let her know. She has a Dell Desktop. Her computer has ran into some issues because it's XP. I told her that Microsoft doesn't recommend her being online with it, since the OS has expired.

So my question is. Should she buy a new computer or can she possibly upgrade to Windows 10?

Hi Jesse,
Its more than likely going to have to be a new computer, you could look up the model number, see what Dell says about it, then buy a W10 licence, no free update.
The computers drivers will be way out of date and depending on its other major components, primarily how much RAM, could be lower than 1GB,. there could be other limitations as well.
