So I put a copy of Professional and entered the key from the box. But when I tried to activate it, it said 'this key cannot be used'. Can anyone help me fix this?

You have to use an upgrade version of Windows to use an upgrade key ... you cant use it for a full version...

A Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade key will not work with Windows 7 Professional.

I don't understand this part: "I got the upgrade for windows 7 hp but it does not have the users and groups option".

You have first updated from Vista Home Premium with an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium...was it "Windows Anytime Upgrade" or a CD Upgrade from HP seller?

Then you wished to have Windows 7 Professional and reinstalled from a retail CD boxed version?

Go to Start>type Anytime Upgrade. it will come up at the top. Select it then choose Upgrade, it will ask for your key. Follow it as it states, do NOT, put dashes in as it does it itself. If your keys are CAPs use caps, pay close attention to 8 and B, 0 (zero) an O (Oh) and D these can be a PITA sometimes, good luck.

I have 2 licensed copies of professional. I was having problems with home premium and reimaged it to professional. I entered the license key and it said it couldn't activate it. Then, it gave me an option list if I want to buy a new license key, which I didn't accept. It has about 15 days left to activate

I know that;) I was wondering about the "users and groups option" part. What users and groups option does Home Premium not have? Aside from not being able to join a domain?

So you have one computer (Asus g71) with Vist HP that came with upgrade to Win 7HP

And you have a second license that was an upgrage Win 7 Pro.

You have upgraded Asus to Win7HP and it didn't have the groups option. You then used the Win7 Pro upgrade key on the Asus and it said "This key can't be used"

You bought the Asus in Sept. 2009? what computer was the Pro upgrade purchased for in July 2009?

If it was a upgrade OEM for another computer, then you can't use it with the Asus. It is a different OEM Key

If it was a upgrade OEM for the same computer, then you should be able to use the key with the Asus. IF this is the case, call Asus. The key might have been black-listed with a group of keys that has been compromised and used for pirating. Asus if you have a valid key, should be able to issue you a new key.

If it was a upgrade non-OEM, then you could use it as a Full install disc: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html Read the disclaimer at the beginning:

Information
This will show you how to do a Clean Install using a retail Upgrade Windows 7 installation disc.

warnsmall.png
Warning

Remember that you need a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7, and to stop using (or uninstall) the qualifying OS while you have the upgrade installed. Microsoft only made doing a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 possible to make it more convenient so you do not have to reinstall both the old Windows version (ex: Vista) and upgrade to Windows 7 everytime you needed or wanted to reinstall.

If you do not have a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal.

For more about this, please see: Microsoft SMB Community Blog : Regardless of what any hack says, a Windows 7 Upgrade is an Upgrade. What you need to know.

I actually have 3 computers. One is the asus, the other one is a 6-year old ferrari 3400, which this account was made for, and the last one is a 6 year old Antec desktop PC running Windows XP Professional.

NOw I did do a clean inastall on professional because I did an upgrade on HP and it was totally messed up. My games didn't work properly, like they did on Vista, the accounts privilages were screwed, and this quad-core computer was slow.

Now I used the same copy of professional that was on my Ferrari 3400. I also have one unused copy of Professional (for the desktop, but it dosen;t have internet access)

What should I do?

So you clean installed Professional over Vista Home Premium because the in-place Upgrade did not perform as you wanted?

Did you boot the Professional DVD and install over the unsatisfactory Upgrade, and if so was the HD already wiped when you did this?

If so, then you may need to run another Upgrade install from the Professional desktop to trick the installer into thinking that it being Upgraded: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html Don't worry all of your programs, files and settings will be kept in place - this is only to enable it to accept the Upgrade version key.

If not, there is another reason why the key is being rejected upfront. Where did you buy your Win7 Professional editions? Has either copy been activated yet successfully?

Try putting the key in again at Computer>Properties activation link. You may need to call MS at the number shown when it is rejected. Tell them you clean installed over Vista.

If this fails, then try running another Upgrade install from the desktop to see if the key will then be accepted.
