I want to learn either Italian or Spanish, but can't decide which one. If you had to choose, which one would it have been and why?

TIA

I am learning italian for about one year now, and the only thing i can say is that italian is closer to english in the pronounciation or at least the voice which is needed is similar. Spanish has the same grammar as italian, but it sounds more like talking to a snake and it is spoken more worldwidely if you think out-of-the-civilization countries. However, for business things they are equally important. :)
They are equally easy to learn (of course english is easier), so it is really up to you. Watch some videos on youtube and listen to them both.

For me, the areas I work here in California, the answer would be easy...Spanish. I wish I spoke Spanish, the majority of my customers speak Spanish, and many only Spanish. A Guy

I like Italian, but Spanish is spoken by more people. I would pick the one where you have a chance to use it occasionally. You really only learn a language when you use it for a while in a country where it is spoken.

I agree with all of our resident advisers above! Unless you're going to Italy and/or love the opera, I'd select Spanish for all the reasons given.

My vote would also be Spanish, for the same sort of reasons given above.

I personally would like to learn Italian. Everyone says that Spanish is more beneficial now-a-days, but I think Italian would be a lot cooler then Spanish! There's just something about the Italian culture that I find fascinating.

Computerchief12, I am able to read and speak Spanish, write and read , speak Italian, a bit of french , polish and Japanese,Russian. The easiest to learn is Spanish , and is very close to Italian , depending on the region. If you look at a translation to-from for Spanish and Italian you will find accent changes and gender vowel changes(a or o) for male and female . both are wonderful languages as are all the European romance languages.

enjoy

quester12,

How do you know how to speak like 5 languages? Doesn't it get confusing? How long did it take you to "conquer" each language and what program did you use?

Like I said above, I'm interested in learning Italian. However there isn't a lot of use for it where I'm currently living.

OK . i have multi lingual friends and various jobs requiring me to learn to communicate.

friends taught me , mostly on-line translation books and tapes. there's a program Rosetta stone that has many language lessons available. anything worth doing takes time and effort. isn't their a little Italian village anywhere in the pen state?

have fun
