Win7-64 Home Premium OEM on a little desktop system at my home.

When I rename file XXX, I get the message:

Item Not Found. XXX is no longer located in c:\...
Verify location and try again. Date created: xx-xx-xxxx

When I click "Try Again" the rename looks complete. But it causes numerous other problems.

I checked attributes on the folder, did a "take ownership", etc. UAC has been turned off for months.

This is evidently a known problem, possibly connected to KB980408. I haven't been able to positively track it down, focus on the exact problem and solution. I need to fix it ASAP.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. Someone has nailed it down?

Thx,
P

This is a problem caused by the deletion or moving of a file. It can be caused by clicking its shortcut to a previous location and it not actually be there anymore. Can you create a new file without moving it, and still be able to access it?

Basically, you cannot rename a file that the system cannot find, and it could be for numerous reasons that it cannot find it. What file are you renaming, a document?

Then I recommend following their solution (Restore, don't install that update, set updates to manual). Look into uninstalling that update, though I'm not sure if you can, you may just be stuck with doing a restore. See if that fixes your problem, and wait for microsoft to give a fix.

I have nothing to restore from previous to the problem, can't find the update, don't trust what Win7 reports for update history.

Waiting for microsoft is like waiting to die.

You know not of the problem. Perhaps someone else does know?
