I've been demoted "need administrator privileges"

From the system admin account.... access denied on changing the permissions of then Program(x86) folder

That's kinda' strange actually.

You should not be changing permissions on ANY windows system folder. That includes Program Files and Program Files(x86) and be very careful of anything under Users. Don't touch ANYTHING under /Windows or if you see a /Documents and Settings folder show up on the root drive (Just ignore that folder completely).

Changing permissions on things randomly without understanding why they are set that way will merely cause your insall to behave worse and worse till it may become unusable. Program files is made unchangable without admin or system priviledges so that programs (virii etc) cannot screw with other installed programs. There is a reason why W7 has been MUCH less suseptable to virii attacks than XP...

In over a year of using Windows 7 release and in beta, I have NOT ONCE needed to go full admin. It's just not necessary AT ALL on a local system except for some /extremely/ limited issues.

Too many people try to wrest god like control over their system without having god like knowledge of its workings and end up having a non-functional system as a reasult :(

Easy transfer was developed so you could move from XP or Vista to 7. I tried it, as a test from one account to another and it works like a charm

To access it just type easy transfer in search, by the start button.

Then using a simple finger drive or a more sophisticated external drive, transer everything to the other drive.

Set up the new account and transfer everything to it.

My suggestion is to transfer one thing at a time. You do not want to transfer the corruption. You can tranfer all your documents, pics etc. Then favorites, then desktop etc. You may just want to trasfer the personal stuff because of the problem, that is your choice

Leave the old account until you are satisified with the new.

Sorry, but programs have to be downloaded again or loaded with the DVD.

Good luck

Ummmmmmm, hold on a second.

OK, when I setup the computer I created an account in domain MATT-M4500 a.k.a. "My computer"

IT give me access to the network, so I login as WORK\Matt...... it's supposed to be MY account, just another domain.

Let's see if I can explain this:
One of my failed attempts to install software under MY account resulted in a dead shortcut on my desktop. I tried to delete it and it give me a permissions error and asked for admin privileges.

I entered my WORK\Matt and password..... Sorry bud, no privileges
I entered my MATT-M4500\Matt and password and viola..... the file is deleted!!!!

So um, do I need to somehow link MATT-M4500\Matt with WORK\Matt??????

That's the one thing the working accounts DO have in common...... they're all on MATT-M4500 domain! The account that does NOT work (MY account) is on WORK's domain.

Does that make sense, or mean anything???

Gosh it wasn't this complicated on XP!!!!

Did the corrupted account ever work the way it was suppose to, if yes, the new account can be set up the same way. As a matter of fact. if it ever worked properly you can just do a system restore.

AHH..DO THIS (From one of the accounts on the MATT-M4500 domain)

Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Give other users access to this computer > Add > Type your username, then type WORK under Domain

Log off, log in under the WORK user, try again

IT WORKED!!! YEAAAAA!

Thank you all.... Very cool. I'm not sure why Windows 7 decided I am two people, but none-the-less it's fixed now.

The fix:

All I had to do was login under MATT-M4500\Matt, and set WORK\Matt as an admin.... and everything was good. The funny thing is that WORK\Matt never showed up as a separate user, so I thought it was an extension of my original account.

Listen, I really really appreciate this.

Sounds like maybe 1 of 2 things have occurred. Maybe your account has become corrupted on the local pc or 2) IF your domain account has been corrputed (or Active Domain account if your are part of an AD).

Contact your IT department and let them know what's going on and have them fix your account if the above suggests don't work.

To be completely honest I don't understand what you just said...... not any fault of yours I'm sure..... due to my ignorance.

It seems to be working now. I'm going to leave it as-is for the moment until I learn more about 7. Obviously setting up Windows 7 the same way I setup XP is not working for me.

The IT department (one man) has never seen or run 7. I'm the only one running it.... which I suppose makes me the expert :sarc:

Just a point of clarification. This behaviour is exactly the same as it would be in Windows XP. Anytime you log into a domain, you are no longer using your local machinename/username account. You'd be using the domainname/username account, which has to be given administrative privileges (if needed) separately from the local user.

Kirsch, great catch!

You may be right in that I setup XP numerous times "correctly" by accident.

It's those things your learn after you know it all, that are the most important.

Well, you may never have had a need to give the domain account admin privileges on the local machine. In most cases it isn't necessary.
