Jan. 13 marks the end of mainstream support for Windows 7

So how much longer can we use Windows 7 ?

But you will stop getting security updates on the 14th January 2020

Hi there
although I said I've done with this thread I have to correct the error of No security updates - that's not true.

W7 WILL CONTINUE TO GET security updates - what it won't get are new features and a service pack. Any new hardware also will have to rely on manufacturer's support - currently most of the W8 (but not all) drivers will work on W7.

Those continuing to use W7 can be assured that security updates will continue as before for a few years yet. You probably won't get the new Ms browser (Spartan) or Cortana but IE will continue to have security updates.

Cheers

Methinks you may have misread Mitch's response (easily done; we all do it ;) ). As Mitch said, Win 7 will stop getting security updates on 01/14/2020, which implies that we will continue to get them up 'til then.

Hi there

Mea culpa -- Mea Culpa. I think in the heat of the thread I confused the end of development date with the end of security updates etc. So all you wanting to continue with W7 will be OK assuming you don't change your hardware too much -- although 2020 is a geological age away as far as technology is concerned. We might be using wearable technology to control a "Virtual" screen or holographic image by then - who knows. It's still 5 years away.

Cheers

Jimbo45, It also depends on your computer. This computer I got is designed to be upgraded. My year warranty expires this month. I don't know how many years/months my computer or its parts will last.

If someone or some company gets a Holodeck* like Star Trek, I probably couldn't afford it and I would become possibly become too additive to it. I wonder what the Holodeck operating system would be called. What I would be interested in, is the Sherlock Holmes type mysteries and you can interact with the fictional characters.

Do you have a link to the Cnet article? Maybe we need to add the word patches as well as security updates will be issued for Window 7. Microsoft even though they wouldn't have to, is they tend to issue optional updates for awhile after mainstream support ends. One optional update they will need to support is MSE. (Microsoft Security Essentials)

This may deserve it's own thread, but if it's true, this is a really underhanded act by Microsoft. I know there are ways around it, but still.... most won't be able to figure them out. Intel Skylake Removes Support for USB based Windows 7 Installation - Major Platform Specs Confirmed I think there are a couple of inaccuracies there too.

I guess I am not technically when it comes some of the stuff inside of computers.

I am assuming the current windows 7 operating system & motherboard will still be able to run & install windows 7 using the current usb drive.

The problem is the new motherboard won't be able to install windows 7 from a usb 3.0 drive. However, you would still be able to install windows 8 & above and a Linux system.--- I am asking is this the correct assumption? I also wonder how this will also affect Macrium reflect that-could this be one way around the issue.

You are correct as I understand it except the USB part, but I'm sure some people have already figured a way around that. As far as Macrium, I really don't know and there is more about Skylake that we don't know than there is that we do know. Whatever effect it has on Macrium, if any, I'm sure Macrium will fix pretty quickly.

Dell does not support W7 on this rig, truth be told.
Hi there

Taskbar is fine in W10 --
It is fine? :(

Flat transparency, mismatch start menu color, bad color schemes, and no visual depth.

If XP, Vista (it was the best in this regard) and 7 are visual pleasures, all the later versions are just painful to look at.

Functionality comes later, at first it need to be pleasant to look at; specially when I am habituated with a beautiful OS over a long time.

I have similar opinions on the Win 8 / 10 looks. I think Win 8 / 10 taskbar / window looks is about someone having a nostalgic hard-on for early Windows (like 3.1) and wanting to re-experience some of its excessive simplicity, ignoring what is sensible - and ignoring what is sensible and design smart is the crux of declining MS mentality for the last many years. Maybe setting Windows' visual design on that course was one of Ballmer's last idiocies before he was thankfully shuttled out of the company.

Anyway, the Win 8 / 10 look for taskbar and application windows is not attractive, is gaudy and distasteful, and is a significant barrier for my willingness to approach Win 10.

Full UI looks customization features will need to be present for me to engage with Win 10. That white, flat square Windows logo for the Start button is hideous, and all of Win 10's square, hard angles is offputting. Also, the system browser icons for folders and HDDs in Windows 10 are downright throwup-worthy disgusting!! The very last things I want to have on my screen throughout everything I work on are the abominable design qualities of Win 10.

If MS can't make Win 10 comfortable, then it can go somewhere else.

That's exactly what the metro guidelines say they had to follow, in line with the "Everything is a tablet" vision. So annoying, I agree. For me is a significant entry barrier, and after all it doesn't provide that many other features (or at least they're not being promoted), while the long standing critical bugs are firmly there yet. It's difficult to find a serious reason to "upgrade".
Maybe if the next computer comes pre-infected with it I would give another try.
