Jan. 13 marks the end of mainstream support for Windows 7

I believe if you install on the last day of extended support, then use Windows Update, you will be offered every update not present in the install media. I would think that would include SP1 if it was not present. A Guy

Actually, it would do that even after that date, from the way I understand it. I think windows xp sp3 will install all updates to the last day xp was supported and possibly include that other patch that was release later for xp. The only thing Windows Update won't update anymore in anything before Windows XP (Not sure about windows nt, Windows ME or Windows 2000). This could all change once Windows 8.1 extend support ends in 2023. I wonder how the life cycle thing is going to work for Windows 10 as a service. I guess time will tell.

The Windows 10 website says that the free upgrade to Windows 10 will not be on a subscription model, but instead just a normal one time thing. So I assume buying Windows 10 normally will be like this too. I hope they never make it a subscription based thing.

Hi there

Some of you long time users really SHOULD have a look at W10 -- it unlike W8/8.1 will be almost identical to W7 in use for desktop users, has some very decent features not available in W7 and will run in general a lot faster and with a lot more security even on older hardware.

I could see a reason for people NOT wanting W8 but I can't really see ANY reason whatsoever to avoid the upgrade to W10 as and when it appears in due course -- always assuming that the price is right.

I challenge a lot of W7 users to tell me what they CAN'T do in W10 that they CAN do in W7 (apart possibly from some really old legacy programs).

Even on the previews I haven't found stuff that won't work on W10 that works on W7 -- Even things like SAPGUI which isn't officially supported even on Windows 8 works fine on W10 preview.

I'm not saying W7 is rubbish --far from it - probably one of the best OS's ever to be developed for mass use - but it's time to move on - especially with newer hardware.

The only previso is cost of course -- and also always remember that you can continue to run the OS as a VM for as long as you want irrespective of support dates.

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo IMO Windows 10 is nothing like Windows 7, it is cumbersome, ugly and at this point very little of it works. I believe Windows 10 is a dog, it strips the best of Windows 7 and strips the best of Windows 8, and creates a new hodgepodge of garbage. Besides, 2 years after it is out, they will design something different and drop it, just like everything else they create.

I drive a 1998 Windstar Ford (no company parts, etc), it is older then XP, Vista, Win7, 8/8.1, I use it everyday, it runs great. Why would I get rid of it

I was just reading negative comments about win10 such as you can not turn updates off or select just some updates. People seem to be saying user control over the OS is going to be more limited-restricted.

sdowney,

The way I understand it, turning off updates or selecting just some updates is just limited to the preview not to release to manufacture or retail version. I am not sure the following applies to the current build of windows 10, I think you could actually disable windows update using group policy.

I know one thing that I can do on Windows 7 is play a DVD, something that you can't do on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and you can run older programs like Office 2007, I have a feeling that would not be supported on Windows 10

Windows 7 + Office 2010 is still the best combo i recommend to non-geek users in my social circle.
I myself can use 8.1 and office 2013 all i want and feel cool but that doesn't change the fact that seven is still the solution for mainstream user.

8.1 needs some serious fine tuning before it comes close....
But still one issue remains. It looses icon thumbnail cache every other day thus rendering the feature pretty much useless. And microsoft haven't fixed it despite 3GB worth updates 8.1 got since its release.

My whole feeling is that W7 should have had an SP2 and W10 should have been the next OS - W8/8.1 is a one way trip to nowhere.

I'm a tad surprised because I thought you were a big supporter of Windows 8.1 and the Surface tablet PC. I guess I just don't see what all the hoopla is about Windows 10 (especially over 8x). Everyone over at the Ten Forums seem orgasmic over Windows 10 so far. I actually like the 8.x UI better (the caption buttons especially) and I find Windows 8.1 very fast.

It just seems that everyone is in love with the 10 TP and I don't get what all of the fanaticism is about. I run Vista VERY happily right now, and I'll move to Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell, once April 2017 rolls around (unless Server 2008 R1 patches can be back ported to Vista, then I'll stay on it longer.)

Not everyone Jody Thornton. I don't get it either. I do like windows 7 and I also like lubuntu 64 bit Linux with xfce desktop and wine 32 bit installed. Some xfce desktops look like windows 98se. That is why I like it. I also like lubuntu/xfce because I can use wine to run older windows 16 bit software.

I am also waiting on the windows 10 catch. By that I mean what is device lifecyle policy and what is windows as a service.

Hi there

Bing ????? Never used it.

Not sure how people set up their computers but apart from a smaller Menu (W7 menu takes up a ridiculous amount of space on a large monitor) and different background colour there's almost no difference in my desktop layout between W10 and W7 - other than the touch keyboard I have enabled in W10.

A lot of the gripes like Bing and Ms accounts instead of Local accounts are probably because people haven't done a basic R.T.F.M and have just pressed Next, Next etc without looking at what they were doing.

I HATED Gadgets and AERO is simply eye candy which probably will be bought back at the next release.

I really don't like the HUGE W7 start menu --it's fine on a small laptop or monitor but gets quite frankly REDICULOUS when viewed on a 50 inch screen !!!.

W10's menu at least is re-sizeable so it doesn't look so ridiculous on a large monitor. You can also delete all those Metr apps on the right side of the menu too if you want a "classic Text" looking menu.

My point is that corporations will upgrade - and to skip W8 is a a good idea - going to W10 is the best route for them. Most of their users will simply have no problem in using the computer just like they've always done.

I really use the Storage spaces feature a lot too -- not available on W7. I have large multi-media libraries and being able to span them across many DIFFERENT SIZE volumes (unlike RAID) gives me far more flexibility too --- I'm not sure how you would manage say a 3 TB Video data base on W7 unless you had large HDD's -- and even then what happens when the disk is full. With storage spaces you just dynamically add another one so your DB can be several HUNDRED TB in size if you want it that large.

By all means keep using W7 - but while it will get security updates for a while forget any nice new features from being added - and that includes hardware too.

Anyway I've said my piece on this -- I'm absolutely NOT against W7 - was one of the best OS'es ever produced - but time moves on. The way I use computers now is so totally different to how I used them when W7 was first released - I probably couldn't have even imagined back then the things I can do now - and having a decent common platform IMO is also a great idea.

Cheers
jimbo

I think everybody gets what your take on this is Jim , problem is the overwhelming majority imo do not feel the same way.

Microsoft just keeps going too fast , all support for Win 7 should continue , i know just off the top of my head people that have bought new computers equipped with SP1 rather recently , around a year now .

Now they read about Microsoft ending mainstream support , thats BS on the highest level .

My Win 7 system boot's up in about 6 seconds with an SSD installed , never an issue , bottom line is if your going to put out an operating system you better support it FULLY just like the previous version .

Not by having an attitude that since your Win 8 was a flop and your expectations were proven to fall far short that you must now go even faster and cut mainstream support for Win 7 even earlier than you would have otherwise.

Thats making your customers pay for your mistakes and that my friend is BS.

Funny I can't think of a single reason to upgrade 7 to 10
Not even the end of support deal might be the best thing to happen to 7 to not have to worry about dangerous Optional updates masked as Recommended :p

Otherwise a useless 8-8.1 version will of course be upgraded but be as used as 8.1 is for me personally there isn't anything there to be impressed about,
Matter of fact it serves even more concerns bricking hdd's/ not fully releasing external hdd's on complete shut down/...

If Windows 10 really had groundbreaking new security protocols to finally pull Windows out of the dark ages from being so vulnerable i would consider it .

The malware World has exploded and it is mostly to due with uneducated end users but everyone knows Windows could have been designed to be much less vulnerable.

Windows 10 does have some decent new security features added, see here:

A lot more does need to be done though, I agree.

Your awesome for reading this.
I like to refer to outlook.com's new security as Mother may I interface where all real security settings are removed from the user and replaced with this type of nonsense,
Which by the way can be triggered a couple of ways the last one I didn't even get to enter a user name or password before triggering it :)
And yes the email showing is wrong and has been updated about 6 times and remains wrong :p

Microsoft has a passion to track now and to me it's quite disturbing,
When a prompt like the above happens all too often it's time to pull the plug on the account.

You could not pay me to connect a Microsoft account to a computer login.

I have one Microsoft account now and it's been a dummy for along time nothing important goes there but that's "If" the deleting debate ends soon :D
It's been a week now trying to delete a outlook.com account

Funny I can't think of a single reason to upgrade 7 to 10
Not even the end of support deal might be the best thing to happen to 7 to not have to worry about dangerous Optional updates masked as Recommended [emoji14]
I guess that's right.
What great features did they add in last two years of mainstream support? If anything, they could have given new task manager through windows updates. :) No SP2 either which was much deserved.
But if their mainstream support means getting new IE version only then they can keep it.
Extended support is all this OS needs to keep it going.

Cheers

The problem is that Windows 7 had more options, features and customizations, for example has roundend Windows cornes and allow you to put Windows square edges. Windows 8.x and 10, has less options, features and customizations and for example has square edges and not allow rounded window corners. Also only allow a very few and little customization.

All users want to be comfortable when using a OS. Someone likes rounded windows corners, others likes square edges, other like flat design, other like 3d or skeumorphic design, etc. Allowing only ONE OPTION, allows only a little percentage of users to be comfortable with the OS.

In general, all properties, options and features are less in Windows 8.x and 10 than in Windows 7 because Windows 10 is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS, not a desktop OS like Windows 7. That makes Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows 7:

- Less customization options. Less Themes (Aero, Classic, etc.)
- No “Advanced Appearance Settings”.
- Less Network options. No “Network Map”.
- Less Wi-Fi options. No Wi-Fi Wizard.
- Less Dial-Up options.

And also has less features:
- Less and bad font smoothing (Cleartype). Fonts see very very much better in Windows 7.
- No Persistent Shadow Copies.
- No Start Menu (Microsoft puts a small start screen in the place of the start menu, but is not a start menu).
- No Windows Gadgets.
- No games (Win32 games). Games in Windows comes since Windows 1.0 with Reversi. Since Windows 8 no games in Windows.

In general, Windows 8.1 and 10 has less features, options and customizations in all aspects of the OS (Ex. Blue Screen show less information, etc.).

Persistent Shadow Copies allows me and save in many occasions (a lot of) of deleted or changes files of folders on all of my own computers or on all of the computers across my companies. Never downgrade to an OS does not have this option.

The small start screen that Microsoft puts in the place of the start menu and call it “Start Menu” is not customizable. I can’t order it in my own manner, I can’t put document shortcuts, I can’t drag & drop elements between the desktop, etc. Windows 7 Start Menu allows this and more things. Its best. This Windows 10 Start Menu is less inferior than the Start Menu in Windows 7 and XP. I can’t remove all the ugly Tiles and the space reserved for tiles. Again less options, properties and features, making Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows 7, because is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

More things. In Windows 7 and older versions of the OS, I have more control of the overall OS. For example, If I don’t want any component (like .NET Framework, Visual C++ Runtime, etc), I remove it on “Turn Windows Features on or off”. If I want to delete any program or application I do it in “Programs and Features” in Control Panel. Also if I want to remove the Windows 7 calculator or Notepad I remove it simply deleting the “Calc.exe” and “Notepad.exe” files and associated in Windows Explorer.

How to uninstall Onedrive, Windows Store, all apps on Windows 10? You can’t.You are allow to remove the vast mayority of apps, but not all, one by one. But over time, will return to appear.

How to uninstall all the apps runtime (RT) libraries? You can’t. Again less control, options, properties and features, making Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows, because is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

And also the user interface is plain, ugly and less intuitive. Previous of Windows 8.x icons are clearly representing the item, and more realist. The Windows 7 Recycle Bin is like a real Recycle Bin. In Windows 8.x the vast mayority of icons are 2-D, one color and most of them are abstracting representing the item. Icons in 2D and in one color icons was something of the 80s, already exceeded and improved. Microsoft is calling Modern, 80s retro designs. Why? In order to run the OS in less powered devices like smartphones and tablets with less powered graphics devices, Microsoft develops a simple, light, simple design and user interface in order to gain more performance on this devices, making Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows, because is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

The new design is ugly, less intuitive and with boring screens that take away the desire to work, or do anything on the computer. Compare those screens.

Control panel settings has tabs, clarify icons, best window and text sizes in order to be intuitive in constrast with the bored screen of Settings, without icons or in some cases with 2D and flat icons not clearly identify the item, with big sizes and big fonts that has no meaning in desktop because is developer to smartphones or tablets, making Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows, because is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

Finally, I don’t understand the meaning of apps on a desktop PC. I have a 2000$ PC to run full powered applications/programs and I don’t want to run apps on my 2000$ PC, apps that also runs on a 100$ smartphone. If I want to run apps I buy and use a 200$ device and don’t need a 2000$ PC. I also own a smartphone and a tablet and I use apps on it. I don’t want to use apps on my desktop PC. I only want full powered applications like Win32, .NET, WPF, etc.

Also apps:
- Not run in a standard window.
- Has not compliant any Windows UI guidelines. Every app is different lacking a standard design. Less intuitive. Win32 applications has good design guidelines. Apps has oposite guidelines. (Ex. Win32 no recommends ALL CAPS in tltles or menus. App guidelines says otherwise).
- Has big sizes and big fonts in order they are develop to smartphones/tablets.
- Are more slow to open and execute.
- They are not full powered. Apps are simple. The are limited by design.
- Less copy and paste support.
- No drag&drop support.
- Not real multitasking.
- No interconnection between apps.
- Not allowing to open more than one instance of an app. (For example you can’t open two calculators in Windows 10).
- Not allowing to install or develop apps outside the Windows Store.

Now Microsoft is migrating all to apps, like Settings, Calculator and more. This is the test that confirms that Windows 10 is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

I read some post that says that Windows 10 is now “desktopcentric”. No. Is appcentric. Apps are for smartphone/tablets making Windows 10 a much lower and inferior operating system than Windows, because is a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS.

I repeat the question, what is the meaning of apps on a desktop PC?

If I want apps on my desktop on Windows I can install any of the Android emulators and I have more and best apps.

What I expect for Windows 10 of any new version of Windows:
- More features, options and customization instead of less features, options and customizations.
- At least the same Windows 7 features, options and customization, but I expected more features, more options and more customization options because it’s supposed to be a superior OS, not and inferior like Windows 8.x and 10 is now.
- Return the Persistent Shadow Copiesis undiscussable and it’s a must option. Without the return of this option, Windows 10 has nothing to do. Also I expected an improved version.
- Since I not use apps on desktop, I want an option to completity not install any app, including the Store, the Settings, the Tiles, and all apps relative libraries.
- A clearly option to create a local account in order to create a Microsoft Account. If Microsoft wants to be honest, its more recommended to be secure and for privacy to create a local account than a Microsoft Account. But is more recommended for Microsoft to create a Microsoft Account in order to make more cash. Microsoft Account has only sense on a Smartphone or a Tablet, not on a desktop PC, making Windows 10 Smartphone/Tablet OS.
- Return of Windows Games (not apps), Windows Gadgets and more desktop features and applications (real applications not smartphones apps).
- And more, a lot of more non relative to smartphones and tablets.

I don't want a Smartphone/Tablet OS on my home desktop PC.

Because of this, and with much more reason,I don't want a Smartphone/Tablet OS on my work, company or for business desktop PC.

If you open the new Microsoft homepage, you will see all about smartphones, tablets and all in one devices. Nothing relative to full powered desktop PC. Microsoft completity abandon full powered PC and that is the reason that Microsoft do a simple Smartphone/Tablet OS with Windows 8.x and 10.

Microsoft thinks the PC is dead because of the bad sales. Bad sales of PC’s is because of Windows 8 that nobody wants and is installed on all new PC’s. The most decrease in PC sales becomes when PC’s comes with Windows 8 installed. See the numbers and dates.

Also, Microsoft is forcing to apps, Metro/Modern designs, Microsoft Account, Microsoft Store and Bing, converts this in the same thing that is the ask.com search default web page and toolbar, that nobody wants, everybody hates and everybody has installed.

In the past I try Bing to search in order to compare to Google. I select Google because is a best and more accuracy web search engine. But every time I install a Microsoft program, an Internet Explorer upgrade or visit a Microsoft web page, I want to take care in order to not install Bing or make it the default web page. This has made me create a strong hatred for Microsoft, the same feeling that I have to ask.com.

I try to use Windows 8, Windows 8.x, the new start screen, the Store, the apps and more. Because Microsoft is forcing to use the Microsoft Account in order to run the vast mayority of apps, the forcing to use the Store to obtain, for example, the Windows games and more, and the real that apps is offering less, much less than any real application, this is generating a widespread rejection of Windows Store and apps on Windows on a desktop PC. I’m a developer and I develop Win32 programs and Android and iOS apps. Windows apps does not have any attractive to develop on this platform. Only has negative reception. Microsoft has worked hard and very well to have this bad reception. Because all of this, I never develop any Windows app and never use a Microsoft Account, the Store or any app and I want an option to remove all of this. Since Windows 8.x, the feeling of people about Microsoft is being increasingly as the ask.com feeling people has. And Microsoft is working hard and doing well to earn this feeling.

Forcing means not doing things well. If you have a good product you have no need to force to use some products or service. Or is that Microsoft knows it's a bad product and so is trying and forcing to impose?

On other post, Drew says that in other posts or blogs, everybody is excited with Windows 10 and likes it. This remember me another post in the Windows 8 Beta blog “Building Windows 8” when Sinofsky says the same.

In general I see talking with real people who real test Windows 10, and reading in other post or blogs, that vast mayority of people thinks about Windows 10 like me.

Microsoft is going in the wrong direction and is to blind to know this. So blind, that is not even able to see the disaster that has Windows 8.x. Also, Microsoft nevers talks about the disaster of Windows 8.x. Always talk about how good the product is, and the best sales and marketshare that have. If is not able to see the Windows 8.x disaster and bad reception, is not able to fix it and predict a Windows 10 disaster.

Time to time.

Now i could be way off on this one and probably am but i am starting to feel that you may not be the biggest fan of Win 10 , can you confirm?

Kidding aside , what a truly outstanding post this is , thanks for taking the time to do it . Very very telling and i want no part of the Win 10 operating system because Microsoft still clearly does not have a clue .

It does seem to be true though about newer additions of things seeming to get considerably worse not better.

It's unfortunate but i think MS has lost their ability to make a truly great OS anymore , as long as they continue to focus on the "tablet/smartphone" World and how to incorporate it into Windows they will continue to fail.
