No, just the Japanese series with english subs. I knew there was at least one movie made based on the series, meant to watch it, but then forgot all about.

Yeah. Light certainly lost his grip, although if he'd been smarter at the start, he probably wouldn't have had any problems.

Assuming the premise of an actual 'Death Note' were to be true - I suppose that could be explained by the initial 'rush of power' that somebody would experience.

He explained to Ryouk (in the first few episodes), that he wanted people to realise that someone was causing the "incidents". IMO - That was his (1st) mistake.
