A week or so ago I ran complete scans with Avast, SAS, MBAM pro and Spybot & all were OK. Then ran an Avast boot-time scan...log scan report below:
File C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\tmp.edb|>.\.\.\Setup.exe Error 42127 {CAB archive is corrupted.}
File C:\Users\Owner\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\26\682b4e9a-2fd48a31|>json\Option.class is infected by Java:Agent-ABT [Expl], Moved to chest

How in the world would I get viruses in boot-time?
What does this corrupted archive mean and does something need to be done with it?

Java site verification said that I had the latest update 6.30. It also appears in control panel. A week later Java is updating 6.30 again but the curious thing is that at the top of the installation box, it read 6.29.

In 'manage add-ons' version 6.30 is also listed using I.E. 32 bit but in I.E. 64 bit, it only has version 6.0.17 enabled but (not verified). What does this mean and doesn't 64 bit get updated when Java updates?

After Java updates, a notice appears and says: This software is already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it?
Why would they ask this if they just installed it? To play it safe I click 'yes' for lack of a reasonable reason, but it doesn't make sense.

Have reran all the above scans again and all were clean.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Vee, hello

java is indeed very susceptible to virus attacks. If you don't use it, I recommend removing it. Also, remember that you should only ever have a single antivirus installed at any one time. For antispyware 'search and destroy' programs, they can be a bit over-zealous in their search: be very careful with them; they can remove something you may find that you need.
  1. To remove java: try removing it with Revo Uninstaller Free and selecting "advanced" after you select "uninstall". Do not select any folders, but only select the registry bluish-green boxs to delete when it gives the option. That way, more of its remnants are removed. :info: If you don't want to install Revo Uninstaller Free, then remove java from the Control Panel. However, if you would prefer to keep it, I can help you with that as well (See #3).
  2. Avast! is a very poor quality antivirus (See here: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/72070-whats-best-anti-virus.html). You might consider using one such as Microsoft Security Essentials instead. This is entirely up to you. If you would like to remove Avast!, please use the removal tool for its complete uninstallation. Be sure to follow all directions! For whichever antivirus program you choose, please make sure it is completely updated, and perform a full scan to see if there are any lingering viruses. Do this with Malwarebytes as well.
  3. To reinstall java: (to fix problems) use a program such as Revo Uninstaller Free to remove it, selecting "advanced" after you select "uninstall". Do not select any folders, but only select the registry bluish-green boxs to delete when it gives the option. That way, more of its remnants are removed. Now go to the java website and download the most recent version of java for your computer. :info: If you don't want to install Revo Uninstaller Free, then remove java from the Control Panel.

First, please download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

Wondering why Oracle has still not released Java 7 through it's auto updates. It's been available a long time. I'm running V6u30 and when I verify my version it says I am up to date.

bru, That is because Oracle still has Java 7 identified as developer preview. The updates to JRE 7U2 have been security updates. Perhaps Java 6u30 will be the last in the JRE6 line.

Thank you for the prompt replies:
Being totally unfamilar with Revo, was hesitant to be removing stuff in the registry so am going the ctrl. panel route and let the remnants be.

Downloaded TFC and ran it, but before I download & install java, would like to ask a couple of questions please.

What is the advantage of installation offline?
I noticed also that the size online was 0.85 mb and offline was 19.35 mb - quite a difference -- (from link below)
I was really undecided about picking out the right java to download from the site you gave me so hope that this one is comparable.

Java SE Runtime Environment 7u2 Downloads

Also, this PC is a 64 bit operating system so shouldn't I be downloading the java for 64 bit also. Should I be using 64 bit I.E. when downloading and installing it?

Thanks. Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi, veegee.

I always use the offline installer for Java. As to the version, if you use the 32-bit version of IE, then download the 32-bit version of Java, regardless of your operating system.

You may not even need Java. Following are reasons why someone may need Oracle Sun Java installed on their computer:
  • Playing on-line games generally requires Java.
  • With OpenOffice, Java is needed for the items listed here .
  • It used to be that Java was needed for websites to be properly displayed. However, that is generally not the case now with Flash having taken over.
  • There may be commercial programs that depend on Java. If Java is needed for a software installed on your computer, there should be a prompt for it.
If the above does not apply to you, consider not reinstalling Java. In the event you discover that it is needed, you can always download the most recent version.
