June 11 Windows 7 Updates Seem to Have Caused An Issue...

Hi everyone, I'm new here, looking forward to speaking with you all. Hopefully I'm posting in the right area! :)

I help my mom with most of her computer issues, and I'm usually able to troubleshoot most of them without much difficulty, but today I've encountered a real whopper that I just can't figure out :(

So here's what's going on:

This morning, she ran windows updates (from what I can tell this is the latest Tuesday patch from June 11). Everything downloaded fine, but the installation phase froze -- so she did a hard reset on the computer, which is an HP laptop.

Everything boots and Windows loads fine, but once she gets to her desktop, everything is very slow and she can't load any programs (clicking icons does nothing). This seems to include explorer, since accessing my computer / documents etc. doesn't want to load either.

I had her go into safe mode and do a restore point (for 6/8/2013), but the problem seems to persist. I've also run chkdsk and scf /scannow, both finding no problems.

Additionally, in the windows update repair tool (er, I think I'm messing up that name, hopefully you know what I mean) it states that it's found issues with windows update, but after running the program, it says:

"Repair Windows Update Components - Not Fixed"

And no amount of pleading seems to be able to make it fix it. Or do much of anything for that matter.

I've tried to be as detailed as possible, but please let me know if you need additional information.

Your help would be very much appreciated. I'm sure a lot of you also get to play the role of "free tech support for family and friends", and you know how time consuming it can be!

Please help. Thank you.

Hi VistaKing,

Yes, McAfee is installed.

The problem with scanning for more windows updates is that in normal mode I can't access windows updates (or much of anything else). And in safe mode windows updates are disabled!

You can see why I'm pulling my hair out here.

Here's where I'm at now: I've downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool ( System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 ), in safe mode obviously, and strangely enough it does run in normal mode. I'm hoping that finds something.

To make matters even weirder, some programs do run in normal mode -- outlook express, for example. Just very slowly.

Anyway, I am monitoring this thread, so any further advice / assistance is super appreciated. :)

Personally I'd remove McAfee and install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials )

To do a clean uninstall . Use Programs and features then run MCPR.exe

Download MCPR here :ar: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe save it to your Desktop .

Right click on MCPR.exe choose

I'll give that a shot, but it'll have to be in safe mode. Do you think McAfee could be contributing to this issue? Would MSE potentially help solve it?

Hair status: still pulling. Haha.

Yes, technically, but things don't load - for example, I can't access the windows update manager. I would try doing that in safe mode, but it's blocked from that mode. Ugh.

What version of Internet Explorer is installed right now. I had to un-install IE10 & go back to IE9 or IE8, because it slowed everything down.

VistaKing, thank you for the resource. Just so you know where I'm at regarding the numbered instructions from your link:

1.) I've ran the SURT, but perhaps not for long enough. I'll try running it for a few hours, but I believe this will likely be futile as when running in normal mode, windows is very slow and can't seem to do much - for example, I cannot access the windows updates panel. Unfortunately, this is unavailable in safe mode (makes sense, but for this situation it's a bummer).

2.)
I've ran an sfc scan with admin privs. Nothing found.

3.)
As I said, I cannot access windows updates, therefore I cannot see/read error codes.

4.)
I do have access to the CBS logs, so I'll prepare a zip and post it if all else fails.

5.) I assume I can just use this thread? :)

Any further thoughts and advice are very much appreciated.
