Ok so i was using vista for a good couple of years and no major problems. About a week ago i had to format and reinstall windows so i decided to get windows 7 while i was at it. I have a 19" widescreen monitor and on vista i was using 1440x900 (i have an nvidia 9500gt) and it was good. but with windows 7 it says my native resolution is 1280x1024 and it just looks wrong and when i try to set it to 1440x900 it doesnt fit to the screen. i have the up to date drivers for my graphics card and im stumped. any help would be much appreciated

Have you got the drivers for the actual graphics card or are you using the default drivers that come with windows. Yould should also try and alter the resolution by going into the graphics cards control menu.

Hello and welcome to the forums, Ryka!

Have you tried making a custom resolution in your NVIDIA control panel for your particular resolution?

Also help us help you better by filling out the rest of your system specs using the following tutorial:-

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Thanks!

EDIT:- Windows 7 may not be receiving the correct EDID information from your monitor, how is your monitor connected to the computer? (HDMI, VGA, DVI, or Displayport?)

It's okay.. i only ask because i wonder if there're any specific drivers necessary for the monitor for it to report its true EDID to Windows 7.. Windows 7 is rather dependant on the information reported by the monitor and in your case just using the generic drivers may be insufficient...

Can you head to Device Manager in your Control Panel, and go all the way down to monitors, right click on Generic PnP Monitor, select the Details tab and from the dropdown menu select Hardware Ids?

Note the value of the the property if you can and report it back please, thanks!

EDIT: Is it possible to connect the monitor via another connection (e.g. straight up DVI, HDMI or plain VGA?)

Wow, thanks for hanging with me here, sorry if it seems like a wild goose chase..

I was hoping the hardware ids would shed some light onto the devices hardware identity but I guess it's unavailable in your case... We're almost out of options here i'm afraid... Windows 7 will not cooperate with your old (it its opinion) monitor in displaying even the correct aspect ratio unless...

From your NVIDIA control panel is there an option for scaling the display or "adjust desktop size and position" section of the NV control panel that you can select to adjust the scaling? If the screen won't cooperate, your graphics card maybe able to scale the display down by it's own...

Like this?

Okay, in that screen by default, all scaling is performed on the display, however you can set it up so the GPU performs all scaling operations. There's also three different scaling options

1: Aspect ratio (maintains the aspect ratio of your display at all times)

2. Full-screen (stretches the image across the screen)

3. No scaling (does not scale the image at all)

By clicking on the "Size" tab, you'll be able to adjust the image manually to fit your screen.

Ok i tried setting it to the resolution i want and then moving it but it still had areas of "space" around the edges that just cut the image off. Suppose i was in need of an upgrade sometime soon anyway xD, i really appreciate you trying to help though
