Just Upgraded to Windows 7 and I have a problem...

Hey guys,

Just recently found this site and it seems like a pretty good place, so I just decided to register.

I have just recently upgraded my OS to Windows 7 Home Premium x64 from Vista Home Premium x64 using the Toshiba Windows 7 Laptop Upgrade. I've actually had the choice to upgrade ever since I got the disk around two months ago, but only now did I have enough time to spare to upgrade the system.

Anyway, after upgrading to Windows 7, I noticed that my system was noticeably slower than usual. I could open several tabs on Chrome while running other programs on Vista and I would barely lag. Now, I'm having problems only with a few programs running. I also noticed that my CPU usage was stuck at 100% and it's not going down or anything. My laptop isn't as slow as a rock right now, but something should be causing the processors to be at a constant 100%. My RAM usage is normal. 4 Gigs being used at around 50% right now.

I'm just worried that maybe some programs that I had with Vista are slowing down the computer, but I was sure to uninstall or update any incompatible software too.

So I'm just wondering, but do any of you guys have an idea about what could be happening?

I'm running on a Core 2 Duo T6500 (2.1Ghz) Processor with 4.00 Gb of RAM. My laptop is around six months old right now. Thanks, guys! :D

Did you actually do an upgrade or a full, clean install? Upgrades often cause this kind of behaviour because of the junk left behind. Upgrade media can be used to perform a clean install, and this is always advisable.

I did an upgrade for this. May I ask what you mean by upgrade media? Sorry, I'm quite new to when it comes to installing OS's. Haha. Thanks :D

And well, I sort of assumed that the upgrading process would include deleting all the other Vista junk so this came as a surprise to me.

You can buy an upgrade version of windows 7 or a full OEM or Retail version. The upgrade version is cheaper than the full version. Microsoft assumes that if you are buying the upgrade version that you already bought and installed another version of windows. Thats why its cheaper than the full version. The upgrade version looks for the other OS when to go to install it. The link above details how to get around that. You can also do an upgrade with a full version, and you can do a clean install to a blank hard drive. Upgrading from Vista to windows while doable, more ofter than not ends up with some glitches that impact performance. Backing up your important data and doing a clean install is the recommended procedure by most members here. It will give you the best chance or success and the minimal amount of pulling out your hair time.;)

Thanks so much for all the advice, guys! I'll go try it out later this week when I have enough time. Just one more question though. I already activated my Windows 7 in my system right now and I'm wondering if it will affect me when I do the clean installation? Like for example, I won't be able to use the same Product Key to do the reinstallation. Or I don't really need to worry about things like that?

One more thing too :# If I'll be doing the clean installation, I can still do it even if I has the Windows 7 already installed? Will it just erase all the current data and overwrite it with the new OS files?

Thanks! :D

When you boot the Win7 Upgrade installer to clean install, it scans the HD to see any prior OS then passes a flag allowing use of the Upgrade version key upfront, even if you go on to use Custom>Drive options to repartition and format before install. Only if you install to a new or cleaned HD will you possibly have to do one of the workarounds after install to activate it at Computer>Properties activation link.

You will know the answer to this if it takes your Upgrade version key up front. If not, leave the key box blank and after install do one of the workarounds given here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html The registry fix is easiest; set a restore point in case you goof.

Personally I would wipe the HD first to overwrite any bad or infected code, then boot the DVD to Custom Install using these tips to get a perfect install: http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/125874-re-install-windows-7-a.html#post1086729

If you want to try troubleshooting your issues first, here are some basics: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-lags-every-couple-seconds-2.html#post1131640

Sorry if I'm bumping this up again, but I'd just want to say thank you everybody! I followed your advice and I was able to do a clean install of Windows 7. Everything's much faster and smoother now. Thank you guys! :D
