Solved KB2604121+KB2468871 update failure+ SFC /scannow failure to repair

Just to clear my understanding: you mention that ' $Windows.~WS is probably the beginning of the Windows 10 upgrade download' then continue 'If you boot to the RE and look for that you can try using one of these commands until you find it...'

I do wish to stay with OS7 at present so should I still be looking at
DIR C:\$W*.*
DIR D:\$W*.*
DIR E:\$W*.*
etc.
and if so do I include the *

I just wish to understand how I search for the windows file in RE. This is all new to me, sorry if I'm slow on thee uptake.

Do I keep doing the following changing the C: each time until I don't get an Error report?

DISM /Image:C:\ /Scratch-Dir:C\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

resulted in

Error: 87 The scratch-dir option is unknown.
For more information refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?_

Just type those commands exactly as posted, once you're in the RE - hit the Enter key at the end of each.

All but one should come back with a 'not found' error - the drive letter you need to use in the command in post #34 is the one that actually gives a listing of files.

It looks like there may be an error in that DISM command line (which I stole from someone else!)

Here's the corrected version

DISM /Image:C:\ /ScratchDir:C\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

Make sure that you get spaces in front of each forward-slash '/'

I've just done a marathon: wasn't sure which of three options to take and didn't want to keep pestering you so I tried all three.

!) DIR C:\ only at start and then through alphabet with dism.exe

2) DIR C:\ with each attempt followed by dism.exe D E F etc......

3) DIR D:\ DIR E:\ DIR F:\ etc followed by the dism.exe for each

To save doing all that again with just DISM / etc., which of the three is the correct approach?

Can I just make certain:

Your email:

*DISM /Image:*C*:\ /ScratchDir:*C*\ etc

On Forum:

DISM /Image:C:\ /ScratchDir:C\ etc

Asterisks or not, or does it make no difference? I suppose the same applies to DIR C:\$W*.*

I did wonder if * denotes a space, since when I was in Advertising doing copy reading, the symbol for insertion of a space was #: but then you indicated no spaces in the DISM line on the Forum.

Lastly, I know that disks are usually C: so in the DSIM is it ScratchDir:C\ or ScratchDir:C:\

Sorry but I'd like to get it correct this time if I can. Confusion goes with age.

I suspect that your email client is stripping the HTML out of the email - and you are getting asterisks in the visible email as a result (Forte Agent and some others do this)

You should always check the forum for the authoritative versions for two reasons
1) all answers are crafted so they look right in the forum - at least to the originator!
2) sometimes typos creep in - and are corrected by editing the post. Such edits are almost always made after the email is sent, and there is no email triggered by an edit or even deletion. This means that the forum content could be vastly different to the content of the email!

The only commands with asterisks in by design in this thread are the ones in posts#46 and #40

Egads!
It looks as if the Windows partition/drive in the Recovery Environment should after all be the C: drive - in which case the proper command for the DISM should be

DISM /Image:C:\ /ScratchDir:C\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

PLease try that, and post back with the exact error message - if any. (note the space in there!)

Nope.

Kaspersky still won't open - they tell me it's dependent on .NET Framework.

My computer still opens without demanding a password.

I've still an important update that can't be made.

Microsoft should be phoning me 10 am tomorrow: I made the request last week, a four day wait was the best offered: but then they were due to phone me on the 23rd July between 10 and 11 am - but they didn't.

I tried for their chat line but last time there was a 5 hour wait.

I know it isn't solved yet but you've been far more help than they have- until they got involved I had a password and Kaspersky.
