After failing twice, I read and followed the directions MS posts for this error code: (1) download and extract subinacl.exe and (2) create/run as admin the reset.cmd batch file, as instructed. Reset.cmd ran as expected. Additional attempt to install update failed with the same error. I have hidden the update for now.

Note: The parameters of this error do not fit. I am Admin and logging in as such. Also logged in using super administrator account. Firewall is not obstructing. Updates are set correctly. Also, please do not bother suggesting running SFC.exe.

The logs show the following problems...
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
StarRAM
ysyfer

The Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

DiskKeeper appears to be causing registry problems on shutdown

Without the logs, that's as far as I can go.

Thank you for that bit. I removed the failed Trend Micro service and all instances of StarRAM from the registry. Disabled Diskkeeper. Restarted and attempted installation again. Same error. I have included new logs. Disk is encrypted, but this has never caused problems before. What other logs would you need?

I see this is still showing...
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
ysyfer

As far as I can tell, this is not a legitimate driver - please run the following commands, and we'll see if it's loading in the normal way - and possibly where from.

I noticed that after I posted and removed the service prior to your post. Attempted to update again, after doing a clean boot of only MS services. Same error. Downloaded the patch itself and attempted to update. Same error. Attaching log files. Ran SFC with this return:

C:\windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 15% complete.

You have a major problem in that access to at least one critical system file is being denied.

post the results

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Thank you. Followed your directions. This time SFC ran beyond the 15% mark. I rebooted and ran the standalone update with success. Attached is the SFC conclusion notice and the CBS log file.

1) I'm curious what your code (which I noted was custom to my PC) in this step did exactly, as I can't make it out.
2) What files were unable to be updated by SFC and whether these are important enough to pursue.

Many thanks indeed.

The problem was that certain critical files had access permissions which meant that the OS couldn't actually read or open them - so the script I posted corrected that.
It's not perfect - the ownership should be set to TrustedInstaller, rather than Administrators - but it's good enough to allow things to proceed normally.

I see you removed the CBS/SFC logs? can I ask why?

As I suspected, there's still a few damaged files that need to be addressed.

I'll post a fix for these later
There were also some damaged Manifest files, which SFC managed to repair. There may be more that it didn't see, so please run the CheckSUR tool and post its log file...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I've uploaded a file - p33aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\p33aa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\p33aa
or
DIR E:\p33aa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\p33aa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply
