Any thoughts on whether to install this optional update? Microsoft are fairly vague and just talk about 'some new improvements and fixes for Windows 7 Service Pack 1'.

I noticed these two updates yesterday but haven't installed them yet. Is this one definitely confirmed as telemetry?

If this is definitely telemetry related then not for me. I wish Microsoft were more specific. Simply talking vaguely about 'improvements and fixes' tells us nothing.

Thanks for the replies.

Updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Show all
August 16, 2016 — KB3179573 This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:

  • Improved performance on specific networks that have a high-bandwidth and low latency.
  • Addressed issue with users encountering a bugcheck, when trying to access a domain DFS namespace (for example, \\contoso.com\SYSVOL) on a computer that is configured to require mutual authentication (by using the UNC Hardened Access feature).

This problem may occur if the selected domain controller has security update KB3161561 installed, and if the SmbServerNameHardeningLevel registry entry is configured to a non-zero value on the domain controller.
For more info about how to get this update and a complete list of affected files, see KB3179573.

Not even in it's prior form
July 21, 2016 — KB3172605 This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced and no new security updates are included. Key changes include:

  • Improved support in Microsoft Cryptographic Application Programming Interface (CryptoAPI) to help identify websites that use Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1).
  • Addressed issue in Microsoft Secure Channel (SChannel) that sometime causes Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 connections to fail depending on whether the root certificate is configured as part of the certificate chain for server authentication.
For more info about how to get this update and a complete list of affect files, see KB3172605.

It's a roll-up which means it's a combination of all the previous updates, which is why it will include the telemetry updates.

I don't detecions to Microsoft any telemetry. I have a real-time ip address monitor and it doesn't show any connections to Microsoft other than windows update checks.

EDIT: There's some info here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/news/399776-august-2016-update-rollup-windows-7-sp1.html

and more here:
August 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1

It's a roll-up which means it's a combination of all the previous updates, which is why it will include the telemetry updates.

I'm still debating whether to install this update or not. I have a list of telemetry updates to avoid. If I install this update, will the individual telemetry updates be listed - and therefore I can uninstall them - or does it mean the telemetry patches will be "hidden" within this one update.

I note MS are saying it will speed up downloading and installing updates but I haven't had any recent problems.

Hi,
Nope you can not uninstall individual updates in a rollup.
It's an Optional update so it can be ignored.

Thanks ThrashZone. I think I'm going to do just that, ignore it. I'll add it to the list of updates to avoid if there is the possibility of it containing telemetry. On a side note, it's a pretty calculating way of getting telemetry into a computer under the guise of a seemingly innocent single update.

Thanks again.
