Solved Keep my DVD Collection on Computer

Hi guys, I am wondering if there is a free way of ripping DVD's to computer, I tried Handbrake, but that costs, I want a free program that can rip DVD's and convert for free.

This way if a DVD gets scratched, I will always have a copy.

handbrake shouldn't cost you anything - it's free.

if someone tried charging you for it, then they're breaking the terms of the gpl-license.

Another way if you have lots of free hard drive space is to create ISOs out of the DVDs. Saves on conversion time & plays exactly like the DVD. Depends on what you want.

There are free solutions out there. However, in my experiences theres always a issue.
For example, they may work for some discs but not others, or they seem to have worked but the copy is flawed.

AnyDVD is a bit expensive, but it really is the best option. If you have a large collection of DVDs you want to store on your PC, its certainly a worthwhile investment IMHO.
It just works as expected.

Isn't it still illegal to break the encryption to DVDs? I back mine up by using an HD video capture device, then I can store them in any format I want without breaking the law (as long as they are for personal use).

Surely if You have paid for them, they're yours; it is legal to rip them and do not share with anyone, it's legal.

I am mistaken. I guess I missed the change in 2010. Updated DMCA legalizes jailbreaking, DVD ripping and more - TechSpot News says that it is legal to break the encryption if it is "for educational purposes, criticism, commentary and noncommercial videos." I believe the "noncommercial videos" part falls under personal use.

Using those copies for yourself is OK, such as on your PC or Mobile device.
So 1 or 2 copies for personal use in this manner is OK.


But creating a mass amount of copies, selling copies, charging to view, or disributing to the masses free of charge is a complete different matter.
You no longer fall into that Non-Commercial/Personal Use and are breaking the law.


So, as long as youi dont have like 50 copies of something, and keep it to 1 or 2, you should be fine.

I would not be too religious about that. As long as it is not a commercial deal, you should be OK.

Not like you are sharing it with the entire world.
