KeePass All Usernames/Passwords Reverted To Earlier Time

I use keepass on my laptop. I store all my username/passwords for everything on it. Today i noticed when i started keepass... i noticed I could not log into several of my accounts. I had wondered why. Until i took a look and many username/passwords for certain sites are not shown in it. I then looked and see many of my username/passwords... all of these got reverted back to early last year. Not long ago i had changed my passwords for many sites and added other sites and passwords.


So many of my email accounts, i could not log into it because the password thats in the keepass that i copy and paste now... well its the wrong password b/c i had these pw's changed. It wasn't that long ago but it wasn't that recent. I did however have a piece of paper that i wrote many of my username/passwords down in case. However, i didn't do this for every single site.


Does anyone know what happened here and how did this happen? I always used an old version of keepass and everytime keepass starts, it ask if i want to upgrade and i always clicked no. Im not sure but i think there is a small chance i could have clicked yes this time though i dont think this happened.


Can someone tell me how in the world did this happen to my keepass? I also noticed i had 2 keepass. I have one that says keepass1 and keepass2. Keepass2 was the new one where i made changes to it. Does that mean the only way this happened was i opened keepass1... then saved it and overrode keepass2?



My issue is many sites right now i cannot log into it because i dont have the password. And to get that password, i need the email address and a certain few email address, i dont have the password to it.
Does anyone have any tips and know what in the world happened here? Thanks.


I do have keepass saved to a usb drive of mine. However, if i open that one, will it be the updated one or would it show the old one? The thing is i think its pretty updated. I want to make sure i dont open it then somehow it get reverted to the old keepass.

Keepass keeps your data in a file.
You must have picked up an old copy of the file.
Perhaps you have TWO of them floating around ... one old and one new.
Look around for them.

The default location for the file is in your My Documents folder.
My file in that location is called "KeePass.database.kdb"

To add to margrave's suggestion, Keepass2 uses a file extension of .kdbx while Keepass1 uses .kdb.

I would do a system search for *.kdb which should return all keepass files to sort your issue. Also note dates both of database files. Once Keepass is running, the Entry View window shows a creation date and modified date timestamp for each password entry.

Getting acclimated to Keepass may take some time, but most operations are straight forward and make sense to provide you with a secure password manager. I would also suggest determining which version you prefer to run and deleting the other.

i see there are 3 files with that database. So do i delete the other 2? Why is it when i click on open file location, it doesnt really look right for each of them?


do most people delete the old keepass file? Or its always kept even after saving new ones etc?

Backup for Keepass?

I put all my username/passwords into my keepass thats in my laptop. I have copy of it in my usb drive. That is all. I also recently wrote many of my username/passwords on a piece of paper and left it in my apt in case something happened to my laptop/usb.


Does anyone here have recommendation on a backup for keepass itself?


Like imagine you don't have access to computer anymore or usb drive. I assume the solution would be something like dropbox? But still, you need to remember your password for that one right just like your master password? Thus just make sure you remember your password for a program like dropbox and keepass itself?

I have used KeePass for many years and have always been extremely careful to keep multiple backups of the very important .kdb file. I have over 500 entries in it! I run v1.29 and keep my .kdb file in DropBox, and by virtue of the KeePass iOS app I also have it on my iGizmos. Once you have the file in your password-protected DropBox account (twice-encrypted!), with DB of course running on your laptop (KeePass iOS app doesn't actually need DB app too, it comms w/DB directly itself), you need only remember your KeePass master password to access the file within any of the locations.

Further the (free) AnotherBackupPlugin allows me to launch KeePass with still more local backup locations i.e. my Server and/or NAS and/or USB stick locations.

It is certainly not something you want to have only one-file-in-one-place!

BTW if you have only a single device e.g. your laptop, no smartphone or other PC available, then I suppose you would need to print-out your KeePass database to hard-copy and keep it in a fire safe or safe deposit box at your bank. But IMO it would be worth acquiring an iPod or iPad just to have another way to access your passwords if your laptop died or was lost/stolen. I suppose another possibility is simply to have it on a cheap USB stick (I have one around my neck, there are also wallet-storables these days) and keeping Portable KeePass right on the stick you could use a public PC e.g. Kinko's or ??? to view your passwords in an emergency.
