Solved keyboard not working properly

this awful im using my screen keyboard to type this. this morning my keyboard was working just fine and now it says something like its not working properly. no error code, so i dont know.

i can type my password to log on to my computer and then nothing. :cry

ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling, trouble shooting, checked for software changes, ect. even tried my backup keyboard.

Your backup keyboard doesn't work either in the same port?


Does it still work 'outside' Windows ie in the Bios etc.


Desktop? USB? Have you tried a different USB port?


Uninstall all your keyboard software and plug in your back up board to a different port if you can.


When starting up your PC, look at the lights on the keyboards. During the POST (before it starts Windows) you'll see the lights (capslock, Numlock etc) flicker. When Windows actually loads, it will flicker again as it 'handing over' control to the OS and the OS drivers.


When Windows loads, after login, Do the lights stay on or go dark completely?


To save on screen typing (which is a pita), quote and yes/no some of the questions.

backup doesnt work either
desktop yes. usb no. both have the purple plugin lol
it doesnt flicker the second time

Okay, it's a PS/2 connection. And both your K/bs are PS/2 only. That makes it harder to test different ports, lol.

(I don't suppose you have any PS/2>USB adapters lying around at all?)


You say you can still login with the k/b which presumably means it still functions outside Windows including the BIOS.

If it didn't work AT ALL outside Windows, I'd say your PS/2 connection has died. But since it only goes dead inside Windows, that points to software vs hardware.

Have you tried safe mode? (press F8 during the POST/boot up period before Windows).

If it works in safemode, then it really points to some sort of software/driver issue.

If it doesn't work in Safe Mode (which uses the generic default driver) - then we've got a problem.

Try Safe mode and report back.

As it stands - the PS/2 connection appears to be 'physically fine' since you can use the K/B to outside Windows ie Accessing Safe Mode, Login etc - but it's dead inside Windows, even with the generic driver. This is a curly one.

Assuming 'something' went awry with the drivers - it might be time to try a restore point.

In the search bar type restore and select 'Restore System Files and Settings from a previous Restore Point'.

Follow the prompts. Select one from the time that you knew the PC was working. (By default a restore point is created everytime you restart your PC, so select one that's at least from yesterday etc)

Let the restore process do it's thing.

Report back if that made any difference.

If it happens again, it might be an automatic software update or possibly a Windows update. At least you'll know how to fix it and have an idea what might be the possible cause.
