Solved Kingston DataTraveler 16Gb pen drive - slow speed under Windows 7?

Dear SevenForums,

I recently bought a Kingston DataTraveler 16Gb Usb 2.0 pen drive and last night I tried timing some write speeds on it, as I thought it was kind of slow (real slow for my machine as a matter of fact).

Formatted it as NTFS, default unit allocation size, and tried copying a 7.06 GB file (single file) on it. Timed the run, took it 22min 11sec, on an average write speed of 6.5 MB/s (advertised 10 MB/s). Here's my full PC spec, I personally believe it is too slow, but please judge for yourselves :p

OS: Win7 32-bit (fresh install)
Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
CPU: Intel i7 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
RAM: 3GB @ 1333 Mhz
GPU: nVidia 8800GT
Storage: SSD OCZ Vertex 2 60GB (boot drive) + Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200RPM (the drive I copied the file from)

Note: already tried re-formatting the drive and messing around with the 'Optimize for Better performance' setting under the Policies tab, (+ every other speed booster setting I knew of), but the 6.5 MB/s average was the best I could get from it.

I am also fully aware of Windows 7's problems in handling USB transfer rates, I have already patched to SP1 and running full updates.
Also, my friend's much older PC, running XP, seems to transfer to it a lot faster.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

Hello andreibutilca and welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't think 6.5 MB/s is bad. Remember, advertised speeds are done using the manufacturer's own testing guidelines and do not necessarily represent real world situations. It's kinda like my ISP. They advertise "up to" 6 Mbps download speed. I'm lucky if I get 3-4 Mbps.

Heh, indeed it is!

To be honest, I was not quite expecting lightning speed from it (nowhere near manufacturer speed), but as far as I can understand from your post, the speeds are okay and 22min for a 7 gig file should be decent for my rig.

Far less concerned now, thank you!

Hi andreibutilca, welcome to the forums, download this handy test tool Download H2testw - Test hacked flash memory - MyMPx "H2testw" this will check the speed for you and also tell you the true capacity of the pendrive , There are many fake pendrives out there ;)

Thank you for the reply!

I've just downloaded the tool and it is currently testing the usb drive. I honestly don't think it's damaged or anything, as I ran some HD Tune tests on it before, just to be sure, and no bad/damaged sectors showed up.

I'll let it finish, nevertheless, thanks for the intel! :)

But honestly, 22min on an avg 6.5MB/s for a 7.06GB file? Is this slow or fast in your opinion? I can definitely live up with it if it's a normal operating speed.

Thanks for your time.

I personnally would think it's average , some drives I have are quicker but some are a lot slower :(

I see. I wanted this particular pen because it was on sale, and 16Gb is just right for my needs (never expected turbo performances, though).

I usually set it to copy some files, then I go shower or drink some coffee, and by the time I'm back, it's usually done.

I'll be playing some more with this handy tool you gave me, just for the record.
